More than half the country is on red alert with more snow expected to fall on Saturday.

Not for the UK, but down south in Spain, huge swathes of the country are covered in snow. Madrid is seeing lows of -12C! Crazy. Many weather records of cold temperatures and snowfall likely broken.

Recall being delayed at Barajas in Feb around 10 years ago. Wet snow and limited de-icing kit. Good snow cover on surrounding hills then, but nothing like yesterday.

A friend of mine from Madrid today reported 50cm of level snow. Most I've ever seen in the UK is half that -- if only I also lived at 700m elevation!

Does anyone know of any pics of this event?

Is this meant to be in the historic weather section?

I know there's a whole host of reasons why, but its honestly ridiculous how a country as far North as us struggles to get decent accumulations of snow, if any in winter, and yet a country like Spain seems to be absolutely fine. Even in normal winters, Madrid is pretty cold (probably owing to its elevation)

Spain getting the goods from very average 850 temps. I know Madrid is at  2000ft elevation so has that benefit, but come on. The UK is so cursed. I get a week of -7/-8 850s and see nothing

Lot of damage to trees in the city due to the weight of snow.

These events really do become extra spectacular in a warming world with diminishing  wintry action...

I see Spain has recorded a new record low of -35.8 which is pretty special. Madrid is forecast to drop to -12 (!) on Monday which would be a  record low for the city apparently, unless that is a forecast for Barajas airport, which has previously been colder?

Madrid saw 'exceptional perhaps even historic' snowfall in early January. Storm Filomena dumped up to 50cms of snow causing traffic chaos and disbelief at the incredible scenes by Saturday morning.

During and after the storm.

As well as the #MadridNieve , Mt Teide on Tenerife saw deep snow.

Madrid is still covered in snow and ice, over a week later. A huge freeze followed the heavy snow and the capital is struggling to shift it. Schools are still not back (they would have been) and it presents problems for the vaccine rollout.

With snow, ice and icicles presenting risks at hundreds of education centers, the new term will not be starting until January 20

That’s quite impressive given how the daytime temps have been in the 5-10C range with full sun for the last few days. Just shows how dry air can help snow preservation.

Absolute insanity in my favourite country in this earth. After just two weeks of maxs of 6-8c on the coasts and -21c in Teruel, it is touching 30c in Alicante.

On the negative side it does countinue to show the effects GW is having, with the whole of winter 15/16, Feburary 2017, Jan 2018, Dec 18, Feb 19, Dec 19 and Feb 20 all being well above average months in the country. And somehow one of the coldest months during the 21st Century in Spain still manages a heatwave at the end.

Obviously climate is different to weather, but its always ironic how whenever the Met Office say "snow will become a thing of the past", there is heavy snowfall both in Britain and europe.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
