Dewpoints dropping over the region now.

0°c Hampshire way

1°C West Sussex

2°c further east. Essex/ Kent.

so any precipitation that makes it further across the region more likely to reach the ground as snow

You expecting them to fall further east? Thanks

Dewpoints will normally drop off at night if airmass is consistent.  Strong winds from the sea will modify this somewhat, so less of a drop further east

Can confirm it is now sleeting in Shoeburyness with 1-9DP. If it drops much lower this could get very interesting

Just checked UKV and it forecasts dps to be 0°C across the west from West Sussex and also including north downs. Elsewhere 1°c with exposed coastal fringes remaining around 2°C

Evening!

temp 3

dp 0 (ish)

Farnham, Surrey

not a lot going on outside, seems a bit damp in the air! I can’t work out if blobs are going to get to me and/or if they will be more than sleet!! I still have no snow symbols at all this week!

Missing the showers here ATM ( just sliding to the south ) but in the mean time the air dries out more & conditions become more favourable.

My heavy snow shower 'settling' parameter is still a few hours away but its coming into range...

Was driving through Frant 30 mins ago (next hill over) and during some heavy stuff it was very sleety with a few glorious moments where it went quiet and it was suddenly a white cloud. Didn't stay that way and was back to light rain/sleet 5 mins later at home.

Plenty of time for those DPs to come down, but we're threading a needle here if we're to get anything notable out of this...

I can quite imagine I'd be doing that if I didn't live near a river. Hadn't realised that benefit of where I live before.

Frankly, if this is the weather,  I wish it would warm up a bit and come of the atlantic.

Maybe a small window for something a bit more wintry in around 12-24 hours, but don't hold your breath.

Proper reset needed I think, perhaps a few days of mild weather next week might be what is needed until the Strat events are resolved and we can get some cold pools into places where we might benefit from them.

I fear 2021 might turn into a bit of a poundshop version of 2013. At least in 2013 January produced a little bit of lying snow, though not the metres and metres of stuff that the models were predicting at the time.

Anyone remember,  this Thames Streamer event in January 2003?

I was staying with my parents, between Bromley North and Grove Park, at the time.

I can remember watching the Weather on BBC Breakfast time, I think with Francis Wilson.

The Southern North Sea started to bubble up just to the East of Southend, around Breakfasrt time, and a train of Snow Showers quickly developed and ran W.S.W., down the Thames Corridor.

I faced a difficult journey from Bromley to my place of work, in Croydon,

Below are a series of charts, relating to that event:

 image.thumb.png.694c86254b79163e16b7f443744b693e.png

A fairly innocuous looking 500hPa archive chart,

 image.thumb.png.e4811f76601a773924e038d56a48fe60.png

But a wedge of -10c Upper Air, crossing our Region.

 image.thumb.png.a451c65aac461f3e171cfd31da23f27d.png

Finally, the Thames Streamer having left its Ppn imprint, across the affected area.

It deposited around 3 inches of Snow, at my Parents home in Bromley.

Does anyone remember the John Kettley, failed Beasterly?

I think John had left the Met Office by that time and had set up his own Forecasting Company.

I'm not sure of the Year but the Meto's Bob Pritchard had a Forecasting slot on Saturdays BBC Radio 5 Live, at the time.

According to John Kettley, the Siberian blast was due to strike the U.K., the following Saturday but Bob Pritchard poured scorn on this Forecast, during his extended Forecast slot.

Got to work in Croydon, to be met by Newspaper headlines proclaiming that the next Ice Age was imminent.

I worked for a Bookmaker's at the time and a colleague, who knew that I was interested in Meteorology, wanted a £5 Bet with me, that the temperature would fall to -10c, by the following Saturday.

Remembering how bullish Bob Pritchard was about mild Weather prevailing, I accepted the Bet.

The Met Office proved correct, and I pocketed the Fiver.

Does any Member remember, what Year this was?

Another time a bit of Meteorological knowledge helped me win a Bet, was when one of our Betting Shop Managers phoned Head Office, where I worked, for his Weekly roster.

This chap told me he would be going to the Races at Sandown (near Esher), at the end of the Week.

I told him he wouldn't be, as a Cold Spell was about to strike and frosts would become severe.

He Bet me £5 that Racing would go ahead but by midweek temperatures dropped to -5c/-6c and the Racing at Sandown, was duly abandoned.

But on another occasion, I got egg on my face "big time."

The lunchtime Forecast on BBC 1 showed a big blob of ppn (Snow), around about the N,E,Midlands and the METO expected this to track South towards London, later.

I made the mistake of calculating the E.T.A. of the Snow, by looking at Surface wind speeds (not at cloud level) and the mileage between S.E.London and the N.E.Midlands.

I bet my colleagues that it would be Snowing in S.E.London (East Dulwich), at 5 P.M.

A few of them jumped at the chance of making a couple of easy £'s, as the sky was crystal clear at the time.

Of course, I'd failed to calculate the E.T.A. of the Snow correctly and plus the Radar/Satellite images on that Lunchtime Weather report, were no doubt a little old by the time of that Forecast.

It clouded over in S,E.London around 3 PM and bucketed down with Snow for around half an hour. By 4. the sky was crystal clear again and stayed that way, for the rest of the Day. That left Yours Truly eating Humble Pie, and a few £'s lighter, in the pocket!!

It was a time when a little bit of knowledge, can prove costly.

Regards,

Tom.
