I plan around Moon Phases and Solar Activity mainly, I have a database of over 100 locations dotted around Norway, Finland and Sweden and do it myself hiring a car, you would be surprised how easy it is to do on yourself, the road from Tromso to Abisko is snowploughed probably around 6 times a day and roads are rarely blocked. With Solar activity really low the last 3 or 4 years (Solar Minimum) there is still an arm/filament that explodes on a monthly basis and gives KP2-KP4 activity so its still been good. Obviously we are starting SC25 now so the next 4 or 5 years its gunna be bonanza time. If your ever interested I get groups of no more than 8 together and head up there, my strike rate is 100% so far so being into the weather helps with knowing where clear skies are likely to be for instance

Sounds incredible, will make a note of that. Guess if you have a car you can just drive all night chasing the clear skies if necessary.

I have heard of the near monthly activity related to the sun's rotation. Is your focus on the lunar cycle to make sure there is no fun moon to dilute the show?

Well so far if this was a snow streamer I’d have been on the very northern edge of it, looking on with snow envy to those a few miles SE of me. Hmmm

Rookie question maybe.. if I’m 60m asl and the freezing level is 200m, is that enough distance for the snow to all melt before it hits me? Or does it not work like that?

Depends on the melt layer

if its wet snow at 200M then sleet 100-150M & rain with odd bit of sleet at 50M

Just driven over the top of WK by the radio mast which is 240M

Heavy rain & big splodges of sleet mixed in

Temp on dash dropped to 2c

So I would say FL currently 400-450M

Snow level 325M

Morning all,

A thoroughly wet, depressing Morning here, in S.E.London but not totally unexpected.

Still fancy there could be a dusting of Snow to those areas with a bit of elevation, later on Today, who are favoured by a N.E. flow.

Having just read the Model Discussion it seems that some Members, are starting to smell the coffee, regarding being patient for a while, to wait and see how the predicted S.S.W. will pan out and whether or not the scattered pieces of the P.V. jigsaw, will fall favourably for N.W.Europe.

Agree with this statement from Allseasons-si, regarding a Tweet from Matt Hugo:

"So reading between the lines ,a relaxation of the less amplified/cold type of weather until a re shuffle of the pack until the lag effects of the SSW down well into the trop pattern."

Just a quick P.S. regarding that post about my Italian Mother, Yesterday.

My Wife, to the memory of her deceased Mother-In-Law, cooked a delicious Italian meal, last Night. See image below:

 image.thumb.png.8b00a4718c24640298bd2b3d12597ca8.png

Her customised version of a Tagliatelle Carbonara. Unlike the authentic Italian version, plenty of mushrooms and onions. But as Celebrity Chef, Gino D'acampo stresses, no cream either. Just a couple of eggs cracked over the sauce, at the end of cooking it.

Hoping to speak to an acquaintance of mine in the next couple of Days, South East Meteorologist, Ian Currie.

Want to ascertain from Mr.Currie whether he's still offering an amazing deal, to South East Regional Members.

I can't remember who the Member was but they received the following, for a very small fee:

image.png.58d5151284033af3909dc513ba609457.png plus one of his County Weather Books - image.thumb.png.7a224eff88adb4f7b69064320cfe3b06.png

plus a copy of Weather Eye, his Quarterly Magazine - image.thumb.png.1ddea7fcfabb832bddf275019b13f838.png

Would also like to find out Ian's views, for the rest of Winter.

Regards,

Tom.

Such a let down, im indoors after doing my ribs in 4 weeks ago, still not ready to go back to work, there is none anyway, sitting on the sofa, looking out the french doors at the squirrels, thinking how fantastic it would be for it to be snowing outside, while im all warm inside, oh well, no doubt it will happen in march for 2 days

So I needed to go back to Leeds for work and I could either go this week or next week.

It made sense to go this week as it looks like there is zero snow potential for London unfortunately.

I have a better chance in Leeds at 200m than central London at 0m. Hopefully the high ground areas in the south east see some snow falling.

Wet and Cold Here, my biggest weather hate!...Such a shame it's not Snow .

When we get a NE'ly more often than not we don't have the precipitation, when we get both we then lack the final ingredients to put it on the table.

Keeping an interesting eye on tomorrow though.

I know it’s an app but it seems snow chances tonight are increasing. Last night it had me as sleet tonight and tomorrow morning . This morning that upgraded to snow for 8 hours with a risk of 60% . Now that’s been upgraded to snow between 2am and 11am at 90% risk.

first photo 9am today update

the 2nd update at 1pm with more snow risk but starts snowing slightly later At 2am

All rain here on the high point of Crowborough ☹️

I used to do a school run, to the beacon specialist school, with my mum, the amount of times it would be raining at the railway bridge, then heavy snow at the beacon was amazing.

3.7c here, can hear the wind howling outside and am sat almost on top of an oil radiator whilst working on my laptop.

Alexa seems to think there is a 40% chance of snow at 9PM and is showing a snowflake symbol...she also told me there was a 47% chance of snow this morning at 8am, but of course it rained (not that I go by what that says).

I reckon I might get some very wet sleet later

Interesting tweet which suggests it is getting tougher for the SE to get snow from the easterly/SE/NE route:

So no surprise we will need elevation to get any worthwhile wintry stuff in the current pseudo-easterly (N Downs maybe)!

Sad state of affairs when we have a brisk easterly flow next 3 days in the depths of winter, but it's not cold enough to bring anything more than sleet. We chase easterlies every winter and they are rare, but when one or two finally come so far this winter, they are insipid! Seems we have to rely on a SSW to bring deep cold from an easterly, last time March 2018, we cannot rely on synoptics alone.

Hanging out for some wet snow next few days with height on my side living on top of the North Downs, but it's not great prospects given the synoptics and time of year, 30-50mm rain possible next few days across far SE, going to be some flooding unfortunately.

Trying to find some crumbs of comfort and EC hinting in the extended that Europe could go in the freezer if the displaced or main split of the strat vortex heading to Europe couples with the trop, but big question marks if this happens for now, a good chance I suppose, but no guarantees.

I've seen snow literally settling on top of puddles of water before. The "it can't settle because the ground is too wet" is a myth. If it's cold enough it'll settle regardless.

The issue isn't the wet ground, it's the lack of any real cold air.

Sorry I meant the fact of its most likely to be wet snow or sleet not regarding the ground. Should of worded it better

6PM lowers to 300M

9-midnight lowers to ~ 200M

Some wintryness then after 9....

Not for me lol, need 100, but capel and Whitfield will do well. I'm not chasing it this year though lol.

Moscow currently at -2, Warsaw is 4°C, Stockholm at 1°C.....until these places get significantly colder, then any easterly won’t deliver, unfortunately. Signs are there for a distinct drop in temperatures over the next 10-14 days, however. Could work out well for the UK.

just drove from work in Sevenoaks back to Tunbridge Wells - a bit of a wintry mix near the summit on the A21 near Sevenoaks Weald and car thermometer dropped from 5C to 3C. Some hope for tonight if you are on a hill.

Think my 140m asl will fall just short in providing any interest.

The rain just keeps on coming, temp is 3c Still to warm for anything like Snow. Ground is far to wet, we need some frost in the ground. But never mind, if it was not for this horrible cloud, the sun would be out. Take care and good health to you all.

Whatever happened to the cold but sunny by day/foggy and frosty by night high pressure systems that used to visit? Would be very nice now. Plenty of places need to dry out after recent flooding. Such a shame about conditions being the wrong side of marginal for snow at the moment, but unfortunately the air coming from the continent just isn’t cold enough with most places above freezing.

And I’ve tested positive for coronavirus again, after a negative test just before Christmas. So annoyed with it all now, but I suppose it could be worse.

Again, have you had symptoms both times? I thought you couldn't catch it twice.
