What a lovely day, temps not above freezing, generally around -1C, a thick frost, freezing fog coming and going every couple of hours and now some icing sugar snow which has been falling since before 8pm giving a lovely coating on the ground. Very sparkly out there!

Everything just seems to happen in the west of the region, the east is always bone dry or we are always on the edge of a band with the light stuff

If this is the main event then wow, although it may weaken as it comes south, but still...

Lightly falling (snow that is!), but barely measurable.

Must be the heat of suburbia

only a cm here but all areas covered and still snowing !!

You’re right of course I take back the cover that disappeared and refilled it again and it still coming down here do we have more to come later on tonight and tomorrow or is this it what we are having now? ☺️ I would take a guess I think we have just a centimetre or so.

Yes...The snow has intensified here now. Temperature at -1.0C  and seems to be steady. DP -2.6C

Wind still very light, but what there is still from the south.

Right here is my 'ramp'........

My theory - that a low centre cold focus is forming actually over the West Mids conurbation..

That is what I hoped would happen when in my earlier post when I reported a SSE wind. (against the oncoming flow)

I have seen the crystal like snowflakes as a prelude to a snowfall before in the Alps and also in Dec 2010 during that wonderful Saturday. Snow suddenly falls from virtually nothing!

These can sometimes  occur, and  when I could still see  the North star overhead earlier on tonight, and that the continuous light sparkle snow was obviously caused by  moisture passing over the cold surface layers.

Could I  be correct?

If so it will be accompanied by a slow temp rise and the snow will turn to drizzle, but we could get 3 or 4 hours of real snowfall out of it. Hopefully it will extend to cover more of the Midlands.

If it is I must give credit to the models who showed exactly this situation last Monday. I have been watching closely all week.

MIA

PS

Looking at the national RADAR, snowfall is developing over the whole of Northern England and Southern and Central Scotland.

This could be interesting as the snow moves south and then is steered south east into the Midlands area 'attractor' area..

My app has just shown me for snow for all but 1 of the next 18hours.!!!!!

Certainly a recent intensification into the precip. If i was in the west mids id be pleased with how things are looking. The only possible issue is if temps rise above 0. The periods of light snow wont be enough to see any gains.
