Scotland/Alba weather discussion - Jan 2021 onwards

If I didn't already have a fair covering of snow I'd be getting mighty annoyed today. Nearly all the showers are passing roughly East to West just to our south, in fact I can watch them out of our front window passing over the Vale of Alford and the hills beyond.

Looking back at the beast from the east. Up here in forth we had only half the snowfall compaired to places like west lothian and the showers die off. Most of our snow came from blowing off the fields and drifting. (12ft drifts). What do you guys think? This will be someting similar?

I'm not far from you, between Carnwath and Newbigging, we do well here in an easterly as long as there is a northerly component, a straight easterly is no good.

Still the greatest low level snow event I’ve experienced in Scotland. I wonder if there were a few cms in the East Neuk back in 87? 

I can remember the January 87 spell too and news reports of Glasgow getting hit quite hard. If my memory is correct the really cold air arrived on a Saturday but the snow showers were being fed in on a south easterly to start  and Edinburgh missed out as Fife took a pummelling but by the Sunday lunchtime there must have been a slight change in the wind and Edinburgh and the Lothians joined in the fun. The snow was deep and powdery but I didn’t measure in these days, just went sledging.

You got much snow now? Been heavy here but keeps melting then laying again haha. Yes a north easterly would be perfect i think! We get th odd heavy burst from the edge of and central belt streamers

Not so good for Edinburgh and Lothians as the streamers will run to the North of us, as I said in a earlier post we will need some disturbances in the flow.

The UKMO and ECM have the flow more E/NE - here is UKMO

Given the isobars being so clustered id be surprised if there aren't troughs that develop in that flow with more organised bands of snow pushing well inland but they wont be modelled until nearer the time id guess although those 'barbed' trough lines are already on the 120 faxes as Kirkcaldy mentions above ...

Just a light covering on grass , snow has been on and off all day, not settling, Couple of cm's by last night but most of that gone by midmorning. Forth must have had a bit yesterday, you must be what, 300m above sea level?  About 230m asl here but still struggled for accumulation yesterday ,even though it snowed all day.

Thinking it will be a washout in the central belt . The temps have went up 4 and 5 degrees since I checked the forecast last night

We have a couple of inches now. Been a great winter. Yeah we are just under the 300m. Snow is to light however. We need it a little heavier.

I was jumping back like a kangaroo so I didn’t ruin the snow and so I could get a picture to show how deep it was. A few folk were looking at me wondering what the grown man was doing jumping about in the snow

Tomorrow night and Friday I think are trending that way sadly, I'd think Friday's warning for here would be better placed tonight from what I've seen since I do think we should be seeing it turn properly in the next few hours. Saturday onwards still looks good though, Met Office has it barely getting to 0C from Sunday onwards with snow here, which looks about right...

Aye, I think the snawline in my gairden is about 2 m above the lawn and has been for the past 24 hrs.

On and off sleet here for most of the day with some snowier bursts mixed in but not lying.  

1.4c/0.8c/998.7/ENE/Gusty.

 

Dog had to be carried in from the car by the Vet because he refused to walk.   Trotted out as nice as you like though!!

Obviously knew where he was going when we put him in the car this morning!

Got some anti inflammatory medication and recommended resting.   (which he will do no problem, believe me!)

The snowline as seen from my garden. That's at 230m. Snowed for 30 hours now and like elsewhere, that easterly gusty wind cuts right through everything. Temp between 0.7 and 1.5C all day again...

Showers not as frequent now and temperature has actually risen again back to 2.1c so a steady thaw of the dusting of snow that had started to accumulate earlier on.

Looking at the various weather apps just now, they are all showing a milder interlude on Friday morning where the precipitation is going to be more rain/sleet than snow - that will dent I suspect the overall snow totals for lower ground.

Birds definitely hungry, large flocks of finches descending on the feeders with plenty of Bramblings ensconced among them - focus on those as they are more glamorous that the Chaffinches and a rare visitor to here!

Nae snaw here at a'.  I seem to have moved from one of the best areas for snaw to the tropics. Hope that applies all summer as well ..

Fine margins though as for Alford, only around 12km further West and a mere 50m higher, you get this.....

Now I'm higher again still but showers are definitely snow and when they hit it's blizzard like. You can start to see where the snow is hitting an East facing obstacle it's beginning to pile up deeper than the other areas. Temp here has also dropped from around 1C an hour ago to just below freezing.

The 0C dewpoint isotherm has crossed the Tay now, we should be seeing snow more widely into Fife and Tayside:

I just drove from Kelty to Dunfermline. No snow lying in Kelty but as soon as I got passed the M90 flyover into blairadam the snow was heavy and laying. Had to reduce my speed a bit. Hopefully a bit heavier here tonight. Noticed gritters sitting waiting in case they’re needed on the motorway.
