Morning all! Yesterday's temp topped about 7.8c, and rather breezy! I recorded a 58.4mph gust late afternoon and a tree was toppled elsewhere in the village. Mild again this morning at 8.1c, so a little light gardening this morning I think.

Slow thaw here still with the temp just reaching 4C for the first time in a while and the sun trying to break through. Currently mostly cloudy 4.1C.

Been well timed half term snow entertainment, fading fast at sea level. Beautiful weekend walking though, needed the stud spikes for the ice. Saw an otter (no pic)

Well, Saturday started well with my jab being quick, easy and painless but then went down hill, first with the rugby and then with a potential ice day being ruined at 23:51 when the temperature went up to 0.1deg.C. Sunday was even worse as my daughter slipped on sheet ice coming out of the house, ironically on her way to doing her shift at the hospital, and ended up with a dislocated shoulder. (Anyone see a pattern here?) Her partner was away for the weekend so I had to get her to A&E. Trying to get her into the Land Rover wasn't easy but the several hour wait at A&E was worse. So, deep breath, reset, and back to weather watching. What a change today.

Temperature currently 8.3deg.C up from a minimum of 4.9deg.C at 03:52 and down from a maximum of 8.8deg.C at 11:37, humidity is 90%, wind 3 to 6mph southerly with a maximum gust of 11mph at 09:30, pressure is 1010.7hPa steady, there's been 0.2mm of rain today and 3.2mm in the last 24 hours and the cloud cover is 8/8.

Drip, drip, drip, currently 6.4C and bright but not sunny. Had reason to take a run in the car up to Huntly first thing this morning. Tried the road over the hill first but it was blocked by what looked like a massive drift right at the top, probably a JCB job for that one. The long way around via Lumsden was clear enough but not ploughed fully width in many places due to the depth of snow at the sides of the road. There's been some impressive drifting going on but everything is too wet for that now.

It was fun while it lasted but I'll be glad to see the back of the majority of the snow and ice, but even with the forecast temps I'm sure it will be a while before I'm rid of all of it.

Light Permagloom today but feels so mild, currently 6.5c with light winds (good to have those back!).

Had to head into Westhill this morning and surprised at how much more snow was there, goes to show how localised the snow showers were last week.  Roads clear but some major potholes appearing.  Thaw has been swift but thankfully no flooding, about 2cm left on the grass.

Sister  reports 'warmth' just now; mother (sensibly) still puts on winter coat, hat, scarf and gloves.

Oh i fully expect that her indoors will have the heating fully on to the max !! its 10c !!!!

Yep at the moment it's warmer but still feels chilly to me lol, 7c and feels freezing.

I am so sorry!   I know what your daughter will have to go through now.   

I thought the snow here would be all but gone this morning.   Still mounds of it left everywhere in the garden.  Even most of the pots still have a layer on them.

The drip of the thaw continues here too but just about every access road still looks like this - 6ft drifts of heavy wet un-ploughable snow. Slow work with a digger! Thankfully our track is sheltered by the forest from the South and East so we got off lightly this time. 

I also heard from a friend that the Glenshee road has been buried by an avalanche just south of Braemar so might be a while before it's dug out.

Hi all.  Well, most snow now gone on the city, except for the piles here and there.  Up in the park a different story, and from the photos in this thread from the "outback" it's still a snowy scene, all be it a bit mushy I guess.  Hopefully roads can be dug out and the thaw there remains slow and does not cause any issues.  

A quite remarkable arctic plunge taking place across the pond.  Sub zero (Celsius) right down to the gulf of Mexico in areas (Texas e.g.).  Brrrr.

For us, the outlook still hold some potential for interest as far as my uneducated eye can see if it is cold you are after.  You don't need to look too far ahead (2 weeks) to see 850 temp range forecasts varying from anything and everything between +10C and -15C!!!  Says it all really for me.  Winter is not over.  But I am hunting short term mild for now, and early next week still looks possible for low teens I would say in some favoured spots north of the border?  SE England could be nudging 20C if things play out to the upper end.

After this then as said, who knows.  But interested to hear any thoughts, but to me another possible easterly could be on the cards, though a bit outside chance at the moment?

Well ladies and gentlemen the Mair Snaw family have found a new home to move to... its not everything i wanted but it is better than what we have... our new destination is Sauchen Aberdeenshire 100m asl.

Will update with details as things go along but hopefully we will be moved and settled before the end of March...

Took a trip back up the hill just after 3pm as I'd noticed a digger & tractor heading up late morning and yes, they've dug the road out. The big pile to the right on this photo was a drift covering the road this morning.

This is just a bit further on, passable if you don't mind using your wing mirrors as mini ploughs on the sides, and you certainly don't want to meet anything coming the other way.

Turned round and parked up a bit further down the hill and attempted to take the dog for a walk. We didn't get far as I was sinking to my knees too regularly in deep soft snow. Even the dog, with 4 paws and significantly lighter, was sinking up to her tummy most of the time. Either going to have to wait until it melts before we try again, or it freezes up, which looks unlikely.

Much better than the Ellon area for snow probably 2 or 3 c colder in cold spells especially with winds off the North sea,frosts for sure too.

They managed to dig out the Glenshee road this morning with the use of some heavy plant, apparently. It happened some time on Saturday (the first pic shows the slope which avalanched) and the second shows the newly cleared road (photo from SAIS).

Question for the group. Is anyone else surprised how little flooding there was considering the rapid melt? I checked Braid Burn and the Water of Leith today and both were certainly high, but not nearly as high as I was expecting. What gives? Perhaps the snow had a low water content? There was a considerable "fluff" factor. But I am a bit shocked that there hasn't been more widespread flooding issues.

Big thaw of any remaining back-garden snaw through the day here and that's it gone. It's been a really interesting 7 weeks or so since the first snaw fell after Xmas, but I'm done with it now. I don't want any more days of murk and rain just a few degrees above freezing, and the easterly was a great sign-off. Did cause us some ceiling damage at the end though, had to get the roofers in to fix things this morning. Crack had appeared where the flat roof meets the slates over the bay window, and the melt took a slate off as well, so that all was £200 quid to fix and it'll be a redecorating job in here. But it's a communal repair so we'll live. Although I've yet to understand the benefits of a flat roof !

Depends where they originate,upland areas still have lots of snow to melt yet so it may take a day or two before they reach peak

Noticed that myself. Even on a walk today there wasn't anything like the level of water running off the hills as I was expecting. No idea why that would be. I'd hazard a guess at the strong wind playing a part but there's no science

I wonder if the wind is a factor in that it scours and deposits in to deeper patches. On walk today the weight of snow is considerable to a few days ago for these deeper areas. Presumably they are retaining much of the rain that's fallen still and as per drm says give it a few days, though working week nights are not too mild this week inland and not too wet either so slow slow?

I'm down to my last 6 inches, might see out tomorrow but I'd be surprised if there was much left by Wednesday

Having spent 30 years living in Westhill I have always wondered why it does so much better than surrounding areas and those considerably further inland. A combination of a reasonable amount of land at a reasonable altitude and close enough to the coast for the elevation to pep up precipitation?!
