Lovely fine snaw here in Leith just now too. It's been a great few days. We're just back from the Braid Hills snow-bowl after 2 hours of sledging. My backside is battered, bruised and bewildered - on the painkillers now (worth it though) and I think a big malt is required as well.  Possibly a wee nap

Its starting to get a bit heavier now...looking at the radar we (thegreen dot) are sitting in one of darker spots.

The temps are holding up well...Air -2.9deg/C, Ground -7.0, Cloud -9.0

Its blowing around as well...small flakes covering all the bare patches.

Has been snowing heavily here giving a covering to the bits that had melted and temperature has dropped from the high of 0.1C to -2C

Chaos is putting it mildly, still blowing in with almost every road around here either blocked completely or single track and only just about passable by 4x4. 

Farmers doing a great job of trying to keep the drifts at bay but it's filling in in as quick as they can plough it. 

If it's like this down here, the more exposed roads must be pretty wild - Bennachie is just a swirling mass of spindrift. 

Really quite severe conditions with genuine white out away from shelter and many villages cut off but barely a mention from the met office.

Bitterly cold but sunny walk with the dogs earlier, now sat with a bramble gin watching the Scotland v Wales game. Nice to see the snow showers feeding through Murrayfield in the last hurrah for this cold spell.

Don't know whether to watch the rugby or the snow which has just started falling so trying to do both.  It may be the last snow I see falling for a while. Try for Scotland!

I'll remember this winter for 3 things - the beast this past week, the sheer number of times we were on the right side of marginal and the number of decent snowfalls depth wise! So unusual for here! 2018 was great and we had almost 5 inches fall in early April so the hunt continues for me  

Edit: 4 things! I need to add the sheer unadulterated misery of the week leading up to the beast

Felt like a really old fashioned winters day today. Light to moderate snow for a time falling on existing snow, no thaw, a biting wind, snow whipping up where it was lying on the fields and a very wintry looking sky. 

Shame today didn’t end up with heavy snow in the west, everything was right for that except the intensity of the precipitation! 
 

Won’t take long to disappear here when the thaw sets in.

Had plenty snow events here since 3rd December and many crisp and icy days, although nothing spectacular. Been a good winter and hopefully a big final event for us in the west will pop up before spring sets in. 
 

Cold walk round the village this afternoon.

Wild windchill last couple of days, -20c material. Severe drifting as mentioned in many areas. Some family members have been blocked in north of here. Went towards the usual local big drift spot earlier but the road to it is blocked/impassable. Some snow showers around and currently -4.5c. Last day to notch above zero was feb 5th but that should change over the next few days 

Yesterday was an Aviemore shop run then dog walk at Loch an Eilein. Few heavy snow showers, relentless spindrift along the loch surface, a fierce gale and occasional sunny spells. Exceptionally changeable conditions. Great winter scenes but very raw, even in layers you felt like you were walking around in the scud

Waited all day for the forecasted snow from the weak front here at Isle of Lewis.The wait was fruitless.No precipitation at all.Ah,to be employed in the forecasting arena;job for life and if you get it wrong,no problems...you still keep your job! The water courses flowing off the moors are solid though.

We had a little snow from that band earlier but as expected did fizzle out and tonight don't feel as cold as it has (the wind stayed away thankfully so didn't feel so bad today) now await the thaw depending how quickly it kicks in flooding could be the next issue

No precipitation here today but currently still -1c . Still can"t believe its just going to warm up that much with such cold ground deeply frosted I think every time we get a clear sky at night there will be ground frost.

With some mini drifts behind north facing dykes there will be reminders of winter for a while yet. Even driving along the A96 to Elgin in the late afternoon there were still areas of packed snow from drifts across the main road. and many ploughed fields had quite a bit of topsoil blown onto the drifts making it brown snowdrifts. Essential journey for young Mr Northernlights vaccine appointment.

[A Winter's Tale]

Another very cold day with some light snow earlier. The past week has been pretty memorable and certainly the highlight of the winter. Although this winter generally hasn’t been as severe as 2010 the period since Christmas has been very unusual for the dominance of cold weather with very few mild days. It’s a shame the cold couldn’t persist for another week as we could have seen a sub zero mean for February. Instead we might end up with some pretty mild weather which might push the mean temperature closer to average.

It’s very noticeable how different it looks and feels compared to December with longer abs brighter days and the sun higher in the sky. Despite all the the sunshine over the past few days most surfaces have retained decent snow cover with around 5cm in the shade. Yesterday only saw snow depth reduced by 1cm despite being higher temperatures. Sometimes I think it helps for snow to melt a little then freeze which seems to make the snow more compact. 

I think we’ll see cold and snow return at some point in the next few weeks but I don’t think this week will be topped. As edo says it would be great if we could have a week like this every year. Widespread snow cover, many areas with more than 4 inches, some more than a foot of snow, lying snow for up to a week, daytime temperature struggling to get above freezing, some widespread very low temperatures and plenty of sunshine. Had the cold persisted at least a week longer and the snow been more widespread then this spell would most likely be mentioned in the same breath as 2010 - in some areas I’d imagine this past week was comparable to some of the best cold spells of the past. I hope for those who have missed out so far will see something to remember this winter for in the coming weeks.
