Definitely a top up outside but just still a little too dark to say how much. If we can stay below zero again today that will be a full week since the temperature here has got above freezing, I wonder when the last time thst happened?

Going to enjoy today in the snow before the big melt starts. looks like an early taste of spring is coming next week although have to say I’m slightly looking forward to 10c and some sunshine ..:

We have around 1cm fresh snow from the overnight showers. Cloudy with a fresh SE breeze and milder than recently with the temp creeping above freezing fir the first time since Wednesday. 0.8C now.

Well the melt is on here. Definite nett loss after last nights sleety mix. Temp currently hovering around 1.6c. Away to have breakfast and get out with the wee fella before it’s gone

They’re not the only ones, residents in the new houses at Hill of Banchory haven’t seen council or factors for days, each saying it’s not their responsibility.

0.5c/-4.1c in the garden just now and a further 4cm of snow overnight. Cracking icicle hanging from the down pipe next to my bedroom window, will need to get son to climb a ladder and inspect joint of that connector once the snow’s all off the roof

     
 

Happy Friday everyone, it’s back to another day of agricultural financial budget training for me let’s hope we get some more snow falling to cheer me up!

Edit to add, there was a helluva rise in temperature in the early hours in a very short timespan!

Lovely bright morning and - 3c, just out getting new tyres fitted

Morning all. Temperature rose here overnight as the SEly wind freshened. Currently 1.9c. We don’t appear to have had any snow overnight or if we did it didn’t accumulate. Looks damp out with a slow thaw.

Nearest wunderground station is showing temp on the rise with the increasing wind, starting at 5am and ongoing, just going through 0C now. No dripping here yet but won't be long I'm sure.

Less cold but still below freezing  at around minus 3, more cloud about but sunny spells and dry.  Strong bitter Easterly causing considerable new drifting.  No sign of a thaw as yet with lane still snow covered for the 8th day with drifts blocking off lower road again.

Morning all.

Not sure, but I think we may have had a very light sprinkling here overnight.   Son was up and cleared drive and walkways last night and they had maybe a cm covering this morning.   Lowest temp achieved was -3.1c which has  steadily risen to 0.3c about 30mins ago. Wind ESE/12mph/1032.3/a bit cloudier today.

Flurries of snow in between glimpses of blue sky, and overnight a respectable 2cm added to the total.

Overnight low of -8.5c, that at 10pm before it got a lot milder after midnight (rising to -2c).

Now -0.2c and rising, and for the first time seeing a thaw off the northeast facing roofs so looks like the thaw has begun.

So far light winds and no real evidence of any drifting.

Going to be a nasty day on high ground with drifting snow. Our limited amount of snow is alredy  drifting in the fields in the fresh to strong SE winds.Snow blowing off all the roofs,however with blue skies and sunshine to compensate, currently 0c. Stunningly cold.

[A Winter's Tale]

Another lovely morning. It has been fantastic to have sunshine and blue sky during the day and clear, starry sky at night. Snow cover has reduced to 6.5cm probably due to wind and sunshine though most surfaces exposed to sunlight have retained decent snow cover better than I expected.

This week has seen here and in my places the second largest snowfall since 2010 and the coldest temperatures aswell - making it probably the most significant spell of cold and snow since December 2010. It’s a shame this spell couldn’t last another week which would put Feb 2021 in the same category as Dec 2009-Jan 2010 and Nov-Dec 2010 as sustained period of significant cold and snow. However this has been an excellent and memorable cold spell probably comparable to late Dec 2000 and Feb/Mar 2001 which were short but fairly notable cold spells.

It’s a relief 2020/21 has delivered some significant snow and low temperatures on the back of a notably cold January. We’d been pretty unlucky in recent weeks to miss out on some promising Synoptics for cold and snow but thankfully we’ve not ended up like 2018/19 - if we had more luck 2020/21 could have been a classic, exceptional winter. This winter has felt unique - it hasn’t been as exceptional or severe as  09/10 or 10/11 but it has been colder than 00/01 and 08/09. The 1980s winters were before I was born but I’d imagine this year has been a bit of a throwback.

Some strange temp shenanigans last night though. Edinburgh airport was reading -11c while I was showing -4c. Nothing strange in the airport being colder but that margin is huge!

Was icy rain overnight here on the coast. Signs of snow slowing starting to thaw on the roofs of houses and sheds.  Still some very light snow falling though.
