Does anyone know the coldest temperatures recorded in February 1985 and 1979? We could be looking at the coldest temperature in February since 1955!

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/library-and-archive/archive-hidden-treasures/monthly-weather-reports

The Met Office has -16.4C at Lagganlia (in Glen Feshie, on the west side of the Cairngorms) on 9 Feb 1979, and -17.7C, also at Lagganlia, on 15 Feb 1985, so last night was easily lower. I think I read or heard somewhere that it has been confirmed as the lowest Feb temperature since 1955.

Minus 17c at 0930 this morning according to the pickup so could have been a little colder earlier on. Not in a particular frost hollow here so pretty exceptional stuff.

Well we’re still at -0.1c at Midday, pretty good going for a stones throw from the sea. Leuchars at -4c.

Still a few wintry days to go but on the plus side, when the thaw hits, it’ll be easier to keep track of the posts on this thread

-23.0C! Winter 2020/21 has now peaked! That official minimum temperature will not be beaten this month.

Surprised nobody in the PR department at the Met Office didn't headline it as "coldest night in the UK this century".  Suppose the Express already has that up somewhere...

Garden thermometer showing -11 at midday. Seems pointless hanging out the washing.

Funny you should say that. We've carried on hanging it out in the last couple of weeks and found it drying.  It does go under a sort of cover (extension of a corrugated plastic roof of a wood shed) though. It's been drying better than much warmer but wetter weather in the autumn.

Honestly no, if only for the sake of the wildlife. The deer must be enduring a wretched time.

Too many deer anyway. The only way the estates maintain excessive populations is by winter feeding.

Roe deer in the woods are too numerous as well but they're more able to find food in these conditions.
