Just an observation (for here) but I wasn't aware that central Fife had it's very own snow shield?   It appears to have been around pretty much all of this winter, stopping things from really getting going.   The only time it hasn't been (so far) this winter was the thunder snow event which most of us experienced at the start of winter.   Weird! ( but then most of it has been!)

Lasted about 10 mins. Dropped a fair bit of snaw... streamer would be nice but for now it looks like showers. But after the rubbish we've had here this winter i would take 1cm on the ground right now..

I'm certainly hopeful it will - there's a bit too much of a southerly component today and the cold pool, while pretty cold, is still a bit shallow - from looking at the NMM soundings for today you could see a bit of an inversion at around 800hPa or so which is capping the convection, certainly Dundee southwards. By tomorrow we'll see colder air moving in at higher levels as well, and the thicknesses reducing:

That's going to allow the deeper convection to build up and merge into more persistent bands. 

 

I'd think that this will occur overnight - you can see at the 700hPa level the humidity goes from around 40%, then there's potentially a bit of a clear spell allowing temperatures to drop properly around midnight or so, then the values really increase 

That's when we'll start to see far more yellow and potentially reds on the radar and a bit less grey snizzle.

Graupel pinging off the window around 1am had some more showers so far tiny bit settling in parts earlier. Should be getting more unstable later tonight with a few hundred J/kg of CAPE increasing the intensity of the precip and the first opportunity to be looking out for thundersnow  can also see the more unstable air with the lighter blue colour coming in on the pressure chart

Good morning fellow Scottie Threaders, how are we all today? My continuing joy at yesterday's result feels very much like a hangover, quite possibly because it is. I am also a bit confused. Usually in the West we have an ever pervading winter humidity that leaves all external surfaces damp, even through prolonged dry spells as we had in December and January. Yesterday, for no apparent reason, everything dried up. Still dry today even although there are wee snows in the air - not many, but constant. They land and are blown about, which means there is no build up. Why's that then?

Temperature 0.8deg.C up from 0.4deg.C min at 08:20, humidity 81%, wind 0 to 5mph east-northeasterly with a gust of 16mph at 01:19, pressure is 1018.8hPa steady, no precipitation recorded but snowlets in the air, cloud cover is 7/8 and the dew point is at -2deg.C.

I shall be spending the next hour touring the house and picking up empty beer bottles, which appear to be everywhere (usually the sign of a good binge) and the place has to be tidy before Wales/Ireland later. Apparently.

Latest Met Office forecast sees heavy snow for parts of NE Scotland tomorrow and Tuesday.

Back home after a walk. Air temperature up at 2.5c here in Pittenweem with 79% humidity giving a dew point of -0.8c and a wet baw reading of +0.6c. Patience needed as those are not parameters for accumulating snow. As @LomondSnowstorm @Kirkcaldy Weather and @edo point out time is on our side and I do think the lower thicknesses forecast for tomorrow and Tuesday should help!

I got the same heavy shower that Mair Snow got.  Left a covering.  More blue sky now so more definitely sunshine and showers but if they're all as heavy as that  so be it.

Just had a decent snow shower here in the city (as opposed to the earlier graupel). Hopefully there will be a few more of these showers coming in off the sea in the coming hours. Hard to tell from the radar and satellite imagery but it is a possibility.

Had a pre lunch stroll down to the river. A skiff even down at sea level. Just a few flakes and bits of graupel in the wind. Temp 1C, wet bulb -1C and dew point -3C here. Not sure about the 850's right now?

An inch or so of lovely powder overnight with occasionally heavy showers blowing through since about 11am.

Encouraging signs here on west coast. Not expecting anything til tomorrow but we’ve had very light flurries all day and a proper shower has now made it through here! Nothing to show for it on the ground but good to see.
