Scotland/Alba weather discussion - Jan 2021 onwards

Wee photo or three from me, this was yesterday outing to Pollok Park - always a must.

Saw a big skein of geese resting out by the Barrhead dams today. Flew over my house in formation there heading north east, was quite a sight, pretty unusual to see in the city.

Light snow in Aberdeen city now - lying pretty much everywhere apart from roads at 33m

Well. after readings edos post, I stuck my head outside and it's snowing!  Quite decent too, but sadly a bit late for me to go out wandering I think... and it'll probably be gone by morning lol

3rd heavy snow shower since 6pm, this one lasted the longest.

4 miles north of Dundee.

Really strange this the radar shows the tiniest of showers bit the fastest lying heaviest I have seen this winter.... Must ease off shortly but been a great little watch.

The last shower here left a covering which has frozen immediately on landing.

Also did the birdwatch this afternoon and though not a complete no show a lot fewer species and numbers as compared with last year. Not sure why as usually when it is cold they feed more.

Well the pub run has just gone off on one.... 1 little chart of uppers for 1 week away.... No doubt less severe in the morning but hopefully the same theme

Another snow shower on here. Looking at the radar somewhere near Stonehaven is getting a pasting just now.

Meanwhile my daughter is wishing she was back over in Indiana where she spent last winter after their first major winter storm of the year.

Morning all

Models are getting a wee bit ridiculous this morning with the old snow depths/lying snow depths! Just focusing out to 120 hours at the moment.

ECM out to 00:00 Saturday.

 

UKV out to Saturday 03:00.

 

Bit OTT with the widespread 50cm but that amount can’t be ruled out for higher ground...somewhere! 

 

Again on the models this morning...higher parts of inland NE/N most favoured for the huge amounts! Especially later in the week! Example below.

Friday 06:00

Obviously all subject to change (track of this makes a huge different with regards to heavy snowfall distribution from North to South!) but this just sits there on this current run from Thursday evening through to Saturday morning - Met Office surely keeping an eye on all that!

 

 

Risk is also there for big totals over the Southern Uplands through this week.

Low ground week ahead still showing heavy rain, sleet or snowfall - covering at the very least for many of us at some stage! Usual higher ground best bet for decent depths. 

All of that before we even get to that amazing run from the ECM this morning between 144 and 240 hours! (Worth a look if you have not seen it this morning!)

Exciting stuff in our final month of Meteorological Winter!

I was just going to post the ECM snow depths, crazy stuff!
 

The ECM is certainly looking better than it was 24 hours ago, no real sign of that massive warm sector it came out with and a very impressive easterly to follow with major snow as the front moves back south. The UKV is a bit meh in comparison for central areas, in large part because it brings the low further north again and with it the higher upper air temperatures, but quite incredible depths for the northern half of Scotland if it came off too. I do think half a metre is almost certain quite widely above around 300m or so, that's been very consistent in the models, but I think the key to the totals for lower levels is how much melt we have to deal with through the week and where the front ends up on Friday/Saturday, as that's really where those totals pile up:

 

Near the east coast certainly up to Friday it's likely to be very marginal but the intensity combined with the cold air starting to undercut from the north/east would probably do the trick for wherever the front ends up, likely followed by convective snow from the east.

Right place and right time this morning and we have an inch of fresh snow between 6.00am and 7.00am .Currently -1c and more showers showing up in the Firth on the radar so looks like a nice snow showery day with the best wind direction of NNE for us

Bit of a clearence with more showers to come .Colours are fantastic particularly the yellow clouds indicative of at least moderate snow. These are colours I remember as a kid from northerlies in February. Still feel lack of pollution is helping to enhance them again.
