I've not moved from my desk all day but just been out for a freezing walk with the puppy, the frost feels an inch thick. Bin lids all frozen shut but no idea of actual temperature. Hoping the snow gods deliver for some tonight.

Loving the pictures everyone

Decided to get some fresh air before work this evening at the local reservoir that is still frozen over.

Raining now and has been since tea time. All white frosty stuff disappeared by lunchtime, although it took me a good 30 minutes to defrost the car this morning. By the time I was returning home after maybe a couple of hours in Portree the temp had climbed  from -1.5c to +1.5c. So I guess the wintry spell is over up here. Nice while it lasted though!

Last one for tonight as I now need to fully focus solely on the lamppost!

We did indeed record our lowest temperature of Winter 2020/21 so far.

The overnight temperature plunged below -12C in the north west Highlands.

-12.3C...not bad at all. (Could go even lower Thursday night into Friday morning)

Looking back at our two previous Winters:

Winter 2018/19 our coldest minimum temperature was recorded on 01/02/19 at Braemar...more respectable -15.4C.

Winter 2019/20 our coldest minimum temperature was recorded on 01/12/19 at Tulloch Bridge...pretty poor showing of -10.3C.

I’ve got one eye on CNN & the other on the radar. JFC.

There seems to be a small mild sector in the north because this is turning out to be a damp mess so far?

I was about to say, the webcams don't look particularly snowy! The UKV has consistently shown sleet further west so not sure we'll get anything decent here... Fingers crossed though.

It'll stall = very cold around the central belt = front won't know what to do. Was the case in 2010.

Surely not! You think that’s likely? I don’t remember what caused that in 2010 too well as was out all day but was it a similar scenario to this?

I like this explanation...

Fronts are the division between air masses. A cold front is the leading edge of an advancing cold air mass and a warm front is the leading edge of an advancing warm air mass.

The movement of these fronts depends only upon the cold air, not the warm air. Why? Well, cold air is heavier than warm air because its molecules are closer together and are more dense than the same volume of warm air. Therefore the cold air can "bully " the warm air.

It was very cold air a front ran into and basically stopped. We'll see..

I remember that day very well indeed!  You're right, the front did stall and we received quite a dumping here.

Was that the same day that the M8 was blocked and all those people were stuck in their cars overnight?  The Transport Minister got into a helluva lot of trouble over it?

Got down to -7 at Glasgow Airport Weather station at 8 this morning!
