And Wednesday it swings around to NE I think which has always been my favourite wind direction

N/NNE for me - we haven't had a proper Arctic blast for quite a few years now that I can recall

If that continues that is a good sign. I remembered an event years ago, it all started as stratuscumulus but very quickly on the sat image, it turned into more speckled cloud as the instability increased so it can change very quickly.

Quite heavy graupel snow falling now - good covering in Durham.

It's not moving, it's just that the atmospheric conditions are becoming much more conducive to convection right up the coast, the snow machine is revving up.

Yes it can be quite dramatic when the inversion clears suddenly over a large area, like throwing a match in to a pool of petrol.

I'm going to catchup on a few YouTube videos then check back in to see how we're getting on.

Lower thicknesses spreading north, they'll reach us too shortly.

I think I'll extend my radar watch for another hour, I'll be paying for it at work tomorrow!

That certainly didn't sound like big fluffy flakes banging against the window. Cloud has broken up nicely now so hopefully will see some good convection going forward.

The last shower that came through here was more snow than graupel. Very little though. Bit of a bust really

Snowing again now. I can confirm the end of our graupel nightmare its pure snow on a brisk wind. Its not massively heavy but decent. They sky doesn't have that lovely orange look about it yet so snow showers aren't that beefy.
