Indeed, that area seems to have pepped up significantly in the last hour. Hopefully a sign of increased instability and things get going for the region in the next couple of hours.

Looks like that line maybe missing Tyneside to the north, the lighter shower band to the south may hit us.

We shall see.

Some heavier snow showers moving into the far north of Cumbria now with reports of snow in Carlisle and more especially Brampton and Spadeadam.

That streamer is actually intensifying as it moves east to west across the country

It's official: the weather is trolling us. The streamers only intensify once they're past the newly-coined Stanhope Gap.

Countryfile forecast looked like it would be pretty difficult for any of us to miss out by end of Wednesday, but there could be periods of frustration if you don't end up under a streamer.

I'm down in south Devon at the moment where we're likely to get zilch unless the frontal attack from the SW pays dividends, but I'm set to move up to Lincoln at some point this spring depending on Covid and the speed of the vaccine roll-out, so should be in a much better position for "easterly" snowfalls by next winter.

It's good having Neil Bradshaw's webcam updating every 10 minutes or so as it means that I can at least spy on the weather from my old home town (I grew up in South Shields and later Cleadon through the 1990s and on and off from then until 2012).  It's often interesting in these easterly setups in South Shields seeing the temperature climb to 2C in the clear intervals and fall to around freezing in showers, which I expect to start happening tomorrow and Tuesday as the thicknesses lower and we start getting more potent convection coming in off the North Sea.  It's not unusual to have a stratocumulus & graupel-fest on the first day of a spell like this (26 February 2018 was an example) so I don't see much grounds for concern yet for this region.

I live in the highest part of Gateshead near the QE hospital and it has been lying here all day but I went down to the Team Valley at 1pm and there was no lying snow there.

Just shows what a difference even a small amount of height can make.

Here is a picture of my location now.

Line of activity heading for Chester le street hopefully. Not as beefy as the streamer north of here but it's a start I guess

There's one setting up right over my location.  Thing is we need to see deeper convection as its just graupel that's falling at the min.

Needs to nudge south a smidge to hit me. Only messing hopefully we will all start to get some meaningful snow shortly.
