Compared to recent winters this one has been ace save for the fact that the area has been generally starved of snow. Following the Synoptics has been very interesting and we have got everything we have wanted except a good old fashioned blizzard.

We still have about 4 weeks of possible cold weather available so here’s hoping for a continuation of similar spells to this one with a couple of battleground situations thrown in as well.

The only warning  required right now for my location is to wear goggles to stop the mini polystyrene snow pellets from taking me eyes out. Useless stuff it is. Its like someone's ripped open a beanbag and threw it all over the street.

Beast from East

I'm new to cold spells in the North, having moved from East Anglia, where the typical North Sea experience is usually much like it is here today - lots of scattered cells, long spells of sunshine between, and plenty of soft hail as well as snow. It sounds like you folks who've lived here much longer than me were expecting something else?

Winds now turning more NE with winds coming through the the straits of Skagerrak.

Perfect for convection and potential for huge streamers which will be formed in the straits then rapidly grow over the North Sea heading straight to the North East under the right conditions (this evening/overnight)

Convection picking up now around 80 miles out.

Extra convection from Baltic to help things along.

What makes me laugh us watching somebody disintegrating because the snow is the wrong type. I understand the sentiment but funny to watch

There we go. Its awful man. Was half tempted to take my Dyson out and hoover the garden its that rubbish.

In all seriousness I'm just feeling  a bit negative this afternoon.  I'm sure once I've finished this report for work and had a coffee I'll be back on positive form again.

You know, I kind of had that impression, but thought it might just be me.

I've got my eye on this feature that develops late tonight and stays with us until Wednesday night. Who knows if it'll come off but that's what's going to be keeping my interest.

I'm actually usually the opposite but I think after this latest lockdown and getting over covid for a second time  I was excited to see some of the white stuff.

I promise to give me head a wobble and be more positive this afternoon.

Cold and snowy week ahead

Author: Press Office

11:43 (UTC) on Mon 8 Feb 2021

A cold week ahead for the whole UK with the continued snow predominantly in the east.

Cold air is now firmly in place across the whole of the UK, with wind chill making conditions feel even colder. Snow showers will continue to feed into eastern parts of the UK bringing further snow accumulations to the regions that saw snow over the weekend.

A number of National Severe Weather Warnings for snow are in force, with further warnings likely to be issued through the week.

Chief Meteorologist Steve Ramsdale, said: “With cold air across all of the UK any precipitation will fall as snow. Snow showers will continue to feed into eastern parts through the week. Many places will see further snow accumulations with a few centimetres likely quite widely. Some areas will see larger accumulations with 20 cm or more possible for some. Convergence lines, where showers organise into bands, becoming heavy and persistent, are likely to drive these larger accumulations and further warnings are likely to be issued as the locations affected become clearer.

“Overnight temperatures will be notably low through the week, especially in areas with lying snow. We can expect to see -10°C  as far south as East Anglia later in the week. Daytime temperatures will also be cold, only reaching 1 or 2 degrees Celsius for many early in the week. With strong winds as well the wind chill will make it feel much colder.”

People's expectations are too high, those sort of events are once a decade if not rarer events.

Checks calendar 2 years 11 months - nope not a decade

People forgetting there was a million relatively lame easterlies like this one between 2010 and 2016 - and presumably beyond (I moved in 2016)

Looks like a potential streamer developing for Newcastle shortly after 1 pm

Not sure about that. Not with that kind of wind, but I can recall at least 1 really decent snow episode every 2 since 2009. Certainly better than this.

That's going to put us in an Amber...

It's amazing watching it form in the straits of Skagerrak.

OK, so that's Consett in June. What about a winter one?

Haha, tbh I've just moved nearer to Shotley bridge than Consett. It's not even bad up there currently, main roads all clear, estates aren't great though.
