One thing is for sure folks, it is bitterly cold out there just did the mistake of opening the front door and the cold wind nearly froze me over! It's got that feel to it...its coming!

I concur with seabreeze.... I am in Redcar too and have very fine snow blitzering around all over....! Just need some really heavy, thick flakes to make it stick!!

The first heavy shower will stick no problem. The fax chart posted above is excellent for tonight

Just to illustrate how useless the models are at picking up North Sea convection

Very fine snow but it isnt melting off so starting to show on the grass a little more after each short passing shower.  As soon as the shower intensity increase, as it will, then we'll see a good cover.

Guys we need to relax, we've literally just established the easterly flow and the convective cap hasn't even lifted yet. To be honest the radar is showing much more activity than I'd expected at this point. I personally never expected much accumulation to this point. Rule number 1 is get the cold in first.

What convective cap? From the front over SE England.

Cumbria sometimes does well with convection snow easterlies like in February 2018 but most models are keeping us dry.

Models were the same in 2018 so hopefully they are wrong now also.

My wife keeps asking me is it going to snow and she is not impressed with my bumbling response about 850 uppers and streamer location, thats my Sunday dinner ruined as a result

Come on guys help me out, will the showers get across the Pennines, what are the main parameters?

Andy

Yes there's a temperature inversion at about 1000m until early afternoon, once that clears deeper convection will occur.

Very light grains with the odd flurry in Heighington all morning. Everything is settling.

Looks darker to the south around Darlo. Expect the showers will strengthen as the day wears on - and think the ruler will come out soon to follow those showers coming inland from the North Sea!

The hills kill most of the showers from the East for your area, a few may get through.

Latest visible satellite showing the convection between the coast and the influence of the low over Germany. You can see as the low pulls away the sea track becomes much longer allowing the showers more time to build before hitting us.

You can see the flow to the top of Scotland is out of the lows influence, which is why the radar is picking up stronger showers up there.

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall.
