Just starting to turn a little sleety here. So it begins

Nice to see a fellow Spital Tounges resident on here I lived there for years lol

On a positive note if its sleeting in Newcastle Central then its not gonna be long before the region sees what we've all been waiting for!

I've prepared a North Sea Snow Machine startup checklist.

- Polar continental airmass blowing over the North sea with a temperature differential of 13c or more (forecast to be -16c) ✔

- Low wind shear (forecast to be near 0) ✔

- Decent inversion height (forecast to be 8-10km) ✔

We just need to knock the rust off first as it'll be 2 years since it was last fired up!

A lot of you probably use this site, but for those that don't, its a great way of looking around County Durham to see what the weathers doing and temperatures

We have several weather station cameras next to roads in the county. You can use them to see what the weather and traffic is like on those roads.

Yep flakes of snow now mixed in.

The start of the much anticipated freeze, stay calm people ( and especially you NickR ) , don't be whinging if you haven't got 15cms by midnight,  there will still be plenty of more opportunities in the next week of the freeze.

TBF I've just looked at the temp charts on GFS. Phenomenal. Sub zero (and significantly so) for the whole country pretty much for 10 days. Everywhere will end up white.

Looks a great site, thanks it should be fun seeing them all turn white.

Lanehead, Forest in Teesdale, Tow Law are my go-to Co. Durham weather-porn bookmarks! Usually tells me whether a trip inland is called for. Shame it's lockdown...

Yeah, Lanehead still has lying snow, even after all the rain. Anything that falls from tonight, won't be going anywhere for a while

Cold brrr wind even though temp 5 degrees feel sub freezing already. Not expecting much precipitation this afternoon we look to be too far west.

I'd be happy even if we just manage an inch cover by Tuesday as it will stick. Perhaps may see a few showers that put down a cover topped up by further showers.

Now... should I bring the rabbits inside? I've left them out in their hutch with -5°C overnight a few times lately, but I'm wondering whether the next week might be a big too much for them. They are born and bred in Durham, though, so...

If they are white rabbits Nick get them brought in as you may not be able to find them by Tuesday.

Difficult to decide whether snow showers will get over the Pennines, in Feb 2018 they did with ease and Penrith area had 15cms, however, other easterly outbreaks have  brought nothing to Cumbria.

A lot depends on how old the upper air is, forecast of about -10c at 850mb is reasonably good butnot as low as the -13cduring the BFTE in Feb 18.

The change is slow, but it's getting noticeably more sleety. Another 1C drop should do it

That won’t be necessary as SE/EA are getting all the snow.

Dear me Snowman we just get Nick onside and then we get you throwing your toys out of the pram.

Yes the SE are going to get snow for a time but in case you have forgot so are we and possibly for at least the next four days and who knows, maybe the next four weeks ??!!

Yes in Feb 18 there was a trough feature early hours of 28th that brought about 4 inches here. Such features won't appear on the charts until 24 hrs ahead.

We have had decent snowfalls from easterlies in previous years but only when trough or streamers have moved in.

Showery convective airstreams more hit and miss, we often see the leftovers a cm or two cover at best. Late Nov 10 brought constant snow showers but only a cm or two dusting.

East Cumbria say east of M6 Tebay north can do well. Usually the demarcation between constant snow showers and more sporadic ones further west. We just sneak into the central-west Cumbria divide roughly along A591 dropping south to Junction 36. Three arbitrary lines in easterlies in Cumbria the coastal strip divide say 5 miles in from coast, A591 divide and the M6 divide.

5 mile coast- little or any showers

5 mile coast inland to A591 - fleeting brief showers

A591 to M6 - longer lasting moderate showers enough to put down light covering

M6 east - heavier showers band together longer periods of snow, decent cover.

As said if a trough or steamer lines in then places quite far west can see a decent cover.

The geography of Cumbria makes predicting where will see precipitation or not very tricky to pinpoint. No other county is more tricky to forecast..

In many ways Cumbria is the most complex County in England!

That’s a good way to look at it, I remember late January 1996. We had 10cms in Penrith from constant snow showers but I drove to Kendal and there was nothing. It all vanished as o came down the A6 at Shap.

In these set ups places furthest east do best from Brampton down to Kirkby Stephen

We missed out on the North Westerly snow last weekend so we are due a break!
