Remember early Tuesday morning 27th February 2018 just at the beginning of the beast and a trough came over the North Sea right across the country and gave me 5 cm in Crosby. It only lasted 3 hours and gave most of the snow that I had all week. if it lasted longer it would’ve given more. What we need is a few of those and we will be in business even in the west. I’m sure if the beast had lasted longer than it did before storm Emma spoiled things  then things would’ve been different.

@Day10 is right about February 91; can definitely happen again if we have troughs in the flow.

Fingers crossed. I fear a lot of very frustrating precipitation/snow depth charts will be posted over the next few days.

I know mate and they are pretty useless if you get a rare setup like this occur.

What was this setup like for the NW? I know we had snow from the west this month but did we also get some easterly stuff too? Precipitation archive charts suggest we did?

Forgot about that, not noteworthy but yes we did as it was my Birthday Nov 30th and it I remember thinking how crazy it was getting snow so early especially here. Couple of cm's.

I remember a time when I was very little; building a snowman and there being a great deal of snow on the ground. Also hearing the sound of huge amounts of snow falling off the roof which I remember really scared me because I didn’t know what it was at first. Can’t think what event that would’ve been but I guess between 1996-1999.

6th February 1996. Battleground setup and for once, cold won! Snow nirvana for those in the west. Blackpool became Whitepool.

If I got a time traveling machine, I would use it and time travel back in time to 6th Feb 1996 in Blackpool.

Subtle change on BBC graphics just now showing all (white) snow for Cumbria and no sign of any blue (rain) appearing, even as it clears northwards.

I think it would have been 1996 when the snow was on the beach here for days.   I lost my house keys on Wallasey prom it was so deep and went back after the thaw and found them

Just heard Hellen Willets say that the Midlands and East Anglia were more likely to see snow tonight.

For here it's an easterly or north easterly that gives the best snow. Drawing a straight line north and we're as far east as Aberdeen so never usually an issue getting the cold in from the east here in Oldham. WNW is an ok direction but a NW'ly often misses us as we're too far east and for a northerly we're too sheltered and far inland but they are good for N Scotland, N Wales, Norfolk etc. They often just bring sunny frosty weather here. But again an easterly is the king. Been in this house since the 70s and all of my best snows have come from there.

Why don’t you get circular low pressure in an Easterly coming from the East travelling West?

A way out I know, but a setup like that even here isn't bone dry!
