Nothing but rain and sleet in this part of Preston

Back to rain here now

Had about 3 hours of snow; but none stuck at all as it's so wet

Where are you in Preston?

Throwing towell in. Precip not heavy enough. Bring on next week.

Yep game over for the north west by large, too me it's just not cold enough, bad timing probably also. In fairness the forecast did say the Pennine regions will be most hit and that was spot on.

What's happening next week? I'm only briefly looking at the models and not viewing the model thread too much(which is ashame as I missed out on the Steve Murr drama) but it looks typical winter weather too me. Might be a bit of polar air but I dont see any significant cold on the way?

A frustrating situation. Ventured up to 230m and as expected everything coated in white, nearing on a couple of inches, drop to 180m and there is about an inch, drop to 150m and it becomes a slushy mess. Fine margins make a difference. If precipitation was heavier and had we slightly colder air a very good event would have happened. Alas was always going to be borderline here.

Still awaiting first cover of more than 1cm this season..

We have a fine sleet at present, a yuck day.

Well it’s better than nothing at least we are in with a chance as cold air isn’t that far away. You never know I think there will be some surprises. Let’s not lose all hope yet.

Banned apparently due to a falling out on the model thread, clearly bad language must of been used. It's ashame because whilst his posts may of been a bit SE bias at times(which is slightly understandable) he had the knowledge.

Can understand frustrations boiling over though, I'm finding this winter frustrating in the aspect of there has not been true deep cold upper air temps wise for a significant period of time and most snowfalls have been transient but some have been quite significant and at least stayed on the ground for more than 24 hours.

I'm taken more of a approach these days of well if it snows, it snows, if it does'nt, then it does'nt. Probably moving to a location that does not get much snow has helped in that but I'm not as much of a fan of winter as I was in the past. Summers are getting more interesting because of climate change and summers in the North West are definately warmer and sunnier than the North East!

Just not convinced tbh Chris, I don't see any significant ridges or height rises and a lack of cold air could become an issue again. As it happens another trough over the UK probably increases our chances but as it stands, Im not seeing much potential in the output at the moment.

I know what you’re saying but let’s just wait-and-see. Maybe things will look different this time next week. ☺️

Some places in Yorkshire just over the Pennines are reporting 10-15cm at quite modest elevation giving the heaviest snowfall locally since the 2018 BFTE not that I’m jealous or anything if only all that rain last night had fallen into slightly colder air! ❄️☃️ Cold drizzle all day here in contrast might as well have been 12c you wouldn’t have noticed the difference just looking out the window ?

Looks like the same places will get hit on Saturday. Lucky buggers. We worked hard for our 1-2 cm over Xmas, they get 10 today!

In reality snow was never even a possibility this far west so there's no disappointment. It has however been very interesting watching events unfold over the the other side of the Pennines. It will be very interesting to see how low the temperatures drop over those snowfields tonight.

Then on Saturday another round of rain here with snow in roughly a similar position to today.

Skies clearing just a smidgen.. looking to my west can see lots of trees clothed in snow around 200m mark and local high ground all white... if only we were 100m higher!

Tomorrow promises to be a cold sunny day and the views of snowy fells will be very welcomed after two very drab low cloud filled skies..

I think this week has shown that we can't take anything for granted in these scenarios, this time last week, did anyone expect a snow event for parts of the country this Thursday?

Kinda shows we were not really close at all to anything significant at lower levels. Maybe PPN intensity was an issue but up here, I thought it was okay, at least a strong moderate rate. I think timing was not on our side as daytime heating(even with no sun) can play a part. Hopefully skies can clear and we can get some frosty weather for tomorrow.

As for further ahead, nothing too exciting, bog standard winter outlook too me.
