Yeah I think your onto something.

I think as time goes on north easterly winds should be more prevalent in our forecast. But to the extent of cold they bring in and how long they last I'm not so sure.

I think the SSW is having an effect now and the juggernaut that is the atlantic maybe showing the first signs of meaningful weakening.

Can see a terrific februrary coming up if signals upstream are to be believed. Hell a terrific end of january if we are lucky

I think where we are were in a win/win though in this situation. If the progression is clean and lows dive far another south east well get battered by heavy snow showers and if lows get stuck and dont head south east low thicknesses slack winds and moisture from the atlantic leave us in with a chance of frontal snowfall

I would take those with a pinch of salt they are based on models not data from weather stations.

Met office forecast for Thursday

"A cold day with extensive low cloud. Outbreaks of rain overnight, turning to snow down to about 200 or 300m in the early hours. The snow may turn heavy for a couple of hours in the morning, becoming light and patchy in the afternoon, then dying out in the evening."

None starter that one sadly even the freezing rain has gone.

Dunno what our local forecast has had for tea. Heavy snow from eight dying away to light snow from two. Unless the met sees colder air pushing back west much earlier they are on crack. I wonder whats the highest even upper record is for falling Snow?

It's not too surprising. They'll be using different data to you, that's all. Snow risk, timings etc vary across the hi-res suite, so slightly different conclusions will be reached.

I think @Harsh Climate's assessment is a pretty close summary of where we stand before the nowcasting tomorrow.

They quite literally show the cold air pushing west and i have used them for years and find them very accurate. Its real time radar. How can a real time radar be based on model output

Yeah we look primed for lots of snow chances. Like they say some of best snowfalls are battleground ones or where sleet/rain has been forecast. Could imagine back in the day before some classics there would have been some dodgy looking overly borderline data at hand lol. Things are never gunna look perfect unless its 1987 with heavy snow showers driving in with temps of -4c lol .

Thursday:

Outbreaks of rain, sleet and hill snow will becoming more patchy through the day, mainly confinded to hills by evening. Feeling cold in the wind. Icy and frosty overnight. Maximum temperature 3 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Cold on Friday, with early frost, mainly dry with broken cloud. Windy with rain and snow on Saturday, and possible further disruptive accumulations. Drier, brighter, but cold on Sunday.

Well the Met Office are now showing heavy snow here from 5am to 10am, then light snow until 7pm. As always I don’t really trust their automated forecasts but it’s interesting nevertheless.

100% Beast from the east or north east.

Nothing better than countless showers/ streamers coming in off the north sea dumping quality powder snow. Watching showers on the radar get closer then looking out ya window when there about to hit!

A steady 3 to 4 feet of snow so far this winter on Blakey.

Wonder if there will be more tonight/tomorrow.

The forecast I posted from the Met Office is for the hills which provides more in depth and technical information ie freezing levels.
