Defo building to the south again. More East this time too so Rotherham side might join in too. Just looked out of a South window and saw a flash in the distance

Looks like the south/west of the region having the fun tonite, all quiet on the East coast, had a good soaking at teatime for an hour and that was it, interesting seeing some of pics and vids people are posting this evening on here and the Storm thread

Phenomenal evening and this last storm has been fantastic. Nice approach with lots of lightning seen then as it came overhead there was lightning really close and from afar as well, combined with copious amounts of hail and convective rain. So thrilled to get a direct hit so early in the season

T'internet briefly dropped out then

Crazy intensity, didn't expect it at all.

What's driving it? No sun obviously so no convection and it's only 8c outside so not even warm! Can't understand where the energy is coming from

Temp and dew plummeted with the hail, now 4.5c outside:

That is what I thought was strange I didn't even know any storms were around didn't watch any weather forecasts was out in Chesterfield and just one look to the south and south east and it was pitch black I said to my lads looks like we were in for a big storm wasn't expecting anything like we got though that was brilliant.

Smashing  dry lightning show here as the shower approaches. Multiple flashes, louder thunder and completely lighting up the sky the last few minutes.

Lightning just about visible in Hull from the storms in West Yorkshire. Just shows you don’t need hot surface temps to get decent instability.

Geniune question, how far away can you see lightning on a night? Just walked the hound up the hill out of the village and can see faint lightning to my S/west, howden/goole direction i guess?

How mad was that?! CGs, hail, shotgun thunder. Didn’t expect that tonight!

Glad you’re getting a good fix up there in the North!

The answer to that is very far! Under the right conditions up to 200 miles away depending on cloud top height, and impedance. I’ve observed lightning from Cambridgeshire to the Dutch Coast, Crewe, Wiltshire, IOW and beyond London. I have also made out anvil tops of CB’s exiting the Belgian Coast from Peterborough back in 2012 on a very clear day! So yep, further than one could ever imagine.

As I have typed that from Norfolk right now, I was making out the flashes from that storm that’s just gone past Leeds!

I remember seeing lightning from a storm near Hull a few years ago, 60-odd miles away. Bizarre experience.

Thanks for the reply, we have an old trig point at the top of hill where i walk up to with the hound, good view of the Yorkshire wolds and could see lightning in the distance, i was trying from an amateur point of view to correlate it with the NW radar,

Now that was the most incredible storm I've seen in years. Woke me up with a direct hit. This is not edited, it was this frequent for about 15 minutes and the rain just before this video was biblical!
