Around 50cm has fallen across the highest parts of the North York Moors yesterday.

Went for a walk this morning at Newgate Bank. Around 30cm of fresh powdery snow underfoot and quite difficult to walk through.

Awesome pics you would think that was Austria or Switzerland and not north Yorkshire.

A Foresty England site called Newgate Bank. Around 5 miles north of Helmsley towards Stokesley on the B1257.

These are stunning shots, looks like you were in the wilderness of Scandinavia!

Also, love the R32, great car!

I know that area pretty well, but never been there.  We stay in Hutton Le Hole every February (although had to cancel for this year), and always stop off at Rievaulx Abbey on our way, so Newgate must only be a couple of miles further on the Stokesley Road from the Rievaulx Bank turning.  Is it open access to the site, and good for walking?  Thinking it might be worth a visit, even without the snow!

About 2 miles past the Rievaulx turning on your right is where you park. Then there's various bridleways/footpaths that lead off onto Rievaulx Moor, where you park the car is around 280m asl then the footpaths lead upto around 330m on Rievaulx Moor.

Well thats interesting as we were sledging at roundhay today n was a couple of inches n yet even more here just less than a mile away. Shadwell, moortown.

Roundhay varies quite a bit in elevation mind you, the Gledhow Valley runs along there and gets down to around 75m.

2 inches is 5cm so isn’t much more than a couple of cm. Compare it to the photos from Cookridge or Alwoodley (or indeed Shadwell) and it’s definitely much less. Still better than nothing I suppose!

This "cold" spell has been exceptional for those in the North of the county with elevation. Some places have seen snow falling everyday so far in 2021 bar today with temps dropping as low at -12c on a couple of occasions. Some places have also seen up to a foot of snow and one of the highest single daily total snowfall in many years.

For those with a low elevation its been quite frustrating with the snowline being above my head on many occasions.

If you live in Harrogate then its a cold spell to remember. If you live in Hull you haven't seen snow for 3 years....

I live in Derbyshire even up the road above 200m there has only been a few dustings the snow has either gone to North East South West of us been so frustrating.

Lets hope we see a county wide snowfall event next time round. End of January please with no marginality!

Hope so it has been incredibly frustrating so  far but cant complain really when you consider the fact some places haven't had any laying snow for years that is quite hard to comprehend really.

Yes whilst here we haven't seen anything significant since the BFTE we have had the odd covering here and there. Not far from me though places like York, Selby and Hull there will be young kids that have never seen snow.

Our slight covering is starting to disappear now.

GFS 12z seems to be showing a snowfest, but the problem is the charts with the real eye candy is 12 days away. So we know that won’t work out !

GFS seems to be on it's own so I wouldn't get too excited yet.

Despite much toy throwing on the main model thread, I dont think the models look too bad for our region after this mild blip, certainly there are plenty of options on the table.

Interesting Met Office forecast for Yorkshire from midweek onwards this morning.

Plenty of uncertainty even at 2/3 days out?

Models also looking good in the longer term this morning
