Roger Federer has withdrawn from the Australian Open as he continues to recover from two operations on his knee, his agent has confirmed. Work is going on to devise a 2021 calendar for the 20-time Grand Slam champion. But he will not take part in the tournament, that is scheduled for February 2021.

Andy Murray has tested positive for coronavirus but still hopes to compete in the Australian Open next month.

The former world No.1 is understood to be in good health and isolating at his Surrey home.

The three-time Major champion had been due to fly down to Australia this week to complete a two-week quarantine Down Under before the first Grand Slam of the season on February 8.

The Scot, 33, is understood to be keen to still play in Melbourne but now faces a race against time to arrive in Australia in time to complete the quarantine.

Murray has not played an ATP Tour match since last October.

He had planned to return to action at the Delray Beach Open last week but pulled out just days after announcing he had received a wildcard.

Former champion Rafael Nadal and fourth seed Daniil Medvedev both cruised into the Australian Open quarter-finals.

Spaniard Nadal, the 2009 winner and number two seed, gained a routine 6-3 6-4 6-2 win over Italy's 16th seed Fabio Fognini at Melbourne Park.

Medvedev beat American world number 192 Mackenzie McDonald 6-4 6-2 6-3 to claim his 18th consecutive victory.

It means there are three Russians in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time in the Open era.

"I want more all the time, but step by step, so this is amazing," said Medvedev, who only needed one hour and 29 minutes to defeat McDonald on Margaret Court Arena.

Medvedev will face compatriot Andrey Rublev in the last eight. Seventh seed Rublev was leading 6-2 7-6 (7-3) when Norwegian opponent Casper Ruud retired with an injury.

Aslan Karatasev, who had to win three matches in the qualifying event in Doha, won on Sunday as his dream Grand Slam debut continued.

No Russian male has won a Grand Slam since Marat Safin in Melbourne in 2005.

Karolina Muchova fought back to stun world number one Ashleigh Barty at the Australian Open and reach her maiden Grand Slam semi-final.

The Czech 25th seed struggled with dizziness in the Melbourne Park heat but refocused after a medical time-out to beat the home favourite 1-6 6-3 6-2.

Barty led by a set and a break but was unable to stop Muchova's comeback.

Muchova will play American Jennifer Brady, who beat compatriot Jessica Pegula, for a place in the final.

Russia's Daniil Medvedev beat compatriot Andrey Rublev to reach the semi-finals at the Australian Open for the first time.

The fourth seed outlasted Rublev 7-5 6-3 6-2 as his eighth-ranked opponent struggled in the 29C temperatures at Melbourne Park.

Medvedev has won all 11 of his matches against top 10 players since the US Open in September 2020.

He will play either Rafael Nadal or Stefanos Tsitsipas next.  That's about to start .. should be a great match.  🙂
