Another hour ticked by, forecasts speeds have lowered again. My personal perspective, I wouldn't rate this as Amber warning stuff, and I mean literally in my location, as i cannot vouch for anywhere else down this way. When I think of Amber warnings, I think of the Winter 2013/2014 storms, and this isn't anywhere near that kind of level.

Always best to assess the warnings given after the event and certainly after daylight.

Those with the worst conditions likely can't report in as they've lost power. The effects of recent rainfall would also amplify the risks associated with windy weather as soft ground gives up its support more easily. T

Anyway, The Solent round to Ramsgate is where the worst will hit, in a couple of hours from now.

A couple of my charts from the last 24 hours.

Just recorded 48mph on two anemometers at the same time. One is at 4.5 metres, the other at 10 metres.

Now gusting 82 knts / 94mph at The Needles.

Haven't driven over to that side of the Island like I was planning to, as it felt a bit dangerous to do so, but going to go for a brief walk around here (Ryde) now to feel the force of it before turning in!

The radar is a bit strange to me. (Amateur). Seems to be a huge body of water stalled over S.Wales/S.Midlands and just sending out outflows of rain.

It does appear that way!

I think the static points are high ground, so the rain gets a bit heavier around those areas due to orographic lifting.

The pressure of the moist wind on the high ground basically.

I love having the windows wide open in this weather!

There was a succession of big gusts and I could hear stuff falling down the roof. Car alarms started going off as well..

I guessing it's starting now then.

Wind has died back a bit since the rain has arrived. It's certainly washing the windows down though.

Yeah, it's Orthographic rainfall indeed, and a very good example of it!

Speaking of the radar, it's not often you see almost all of England covered in rainfall at the same time. As of now, other than the far north east corner and the north coast of Cumbria, that is the case!

That really is an absolute wall of water coming in on the radar! No messing about from this particular front!

Yes you can see why they were concerned about the amount of rain as well as the wind.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
