Incredible orographic rain totals and consequent damage.   Similar in uplands of NW England.   2020 very near 50 yr max rain record already.  Just 20mm more needed.

A prolonged rain has brought more than 550 mm of rain across parts of the East Fjords, Iceland, and cause damaging landslides in the town of Seyðisfjörður.

Yesterday Iceland recorded its (provisional) hottest August day.

Hallormsstaður 29.35 ° C at 13:20 . This is a forested area in the NE of Iceland and saw a good break in the clouds yesterday before the breeze picked up. Our UK high pressure helping the flow of warm air northwards on its western side.

The altime (undisputed) Iceland record is 30.5C from June 1939 and today looks to be another hot day.

Unusual strength of winds today for south Iceland including the capital as a rapidly deepening low pressure moves by. Up to storm force in Orange warning.  Impressive jet which is far enough north to keep much of BRitain in fine weather. gales for NW Scotland later.

This was a week or so ago..when what looked like a hurricane I posted..
Iceland hit by record-breaking waves, among the highest ever measured in the world..

A violent bomb cyclone affecting Iceland on February 7 and 8, 2022, produced hurricane-force winds and record-breaking waves at the southern coast of the country. One of the waves reached 40 m (131 feet) and blew off the scale, making it by far the highest measured wave off the coast of Iceland and among the highest ever measured in the world.

Garðskagi wave measuring buoys repeatedly reported 30 m (98 feet) waves during the storm, breaking the previous record wave height in Iceland set on January 9, 1990, at 25 m (82 feet).

However, one of the waves was so powerful that the meter struck out at 40 m (131 feet) and therefore it's currently uncertain how high the wave actually was.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
