Current GFS run gives us a cold first week to January;

1 0.7
2 1.0
3 0.9
4 0.9
5 1.1
6 1.1
7 1.0

Over 3.0 C below 1981 - 10 average.

Last time had a colder first week was 2010. 2009 also brought a very cold week. I'll wait until 31st before predicting, current forecast suggests a cold January ahead, not been able to say that since 2010.

1.2C and 50mm thanks I don’t think there’s not much better opportunity to go with a cold score. Or even subzero Janaury if you’re extremely brave the last of which was in 1979.

Although I'd love to see a cake-and-eat-it January (CET of -1C and 150mm' 'rainfall') I'll take a more pragmatic approach:

1.9C and 55mm please, Roger.

As giddy as we all are we only have to think of months like Jan 09 and 13 and see that it's possible we may get 2 very cold weeks before something more normal or high pressure dominated rather than a Jan 63 repeat.

As much as I would like to get excited I am going to temper it. Although most analogues are mild and my other method calls for a near average outcome, 96 and 11 did see cool January's so I shall go with the coldest outcome based on the expectation that the first half will be near zero with a milder end to the month.

I shall go for 3.7C, 60mm.
