I can't believe the same areas that get all the severe thunderstorms get all the snow, while here it's 6c and raining

Yeah but this was always going to be localised initially, especially with the 850's sat where they are?

Admittedly we're really looking out into the new year for signs of a significant nationwide event.

Sporadic drop and drip events the order of the day until then, I fear.

This is the best fall of snow for us since the BFTE back in 2018.  I can't believe I've had to wait this long for a decent fall of snow (around 2 inches) but this winter continues to surprise.

Aye, and here, reminds me more of 10th Dec '17 event, 5cms or so in not the coldest air

I see this thread has turned into the "Parler" to the mod threads "Twitter". Thanks for ruining what this thread is supposed to be about.

Thank god someone had the good sense to create the cold thread.

I've been here long enough to remember when Moans, Ramps and Banter threads started - they were set up for exactly that purpose to remove the dross from the main models thread, they were originally called model moans, ramps and banter. I don't know what purpose you're attributing to them, but there existence is a legacy from when model watching had it's own specialist sub forum and had these threads alongside the daily model threads to cut down on non-model related cack in the model threads.

I'm sorry, were you complaining about the models or the people posting in the model thread?

I'm sure, with your extensive experience of this forum, know the difference between the two. And which of the two is allowed and which one isn't!

I was complaining about neither, if you're actually reading my posts. Must have me confused with someone else. I was moaning about media coverage of the weather and responding to people pretending Lancashire was somehow now in the midlands.

Also you're allowed to criticise general nuttiness of the model thread, you just can't criticise individual posters. There's nothing wrong with criticising the entire thread yo-yoing between two similarly mediocre runs.

Met office will never stick their neck out regarding snow or cold but bit brave to say NO INDICATIONS of exceptionally cold conditions in their latest extended outlook, where their are indications in the models,,still they never admit they are wrong.

Like 10 day trend forecast from last wednesday said high over the uk by this saturday, not looking likely now.

You're right, I wasn't criticising you directly, I didn't even read what you had written. But as you was the first to jump in my post, I assumed you were one of snippers.

My post was aimed at the posters who thinks it's fine to criticise those that post in the mod thread when they offer nothing to the forum themselves. And they are the ones who bring this forum down far more than the general ramping and cold chasing that goes on in the mod thread.

And no, you shouldn't be able to criticise what you call the "general nuttiness" of the mod thread, unless you yourself are prepared to do it in a way of presenting your own thoughts in a constructive manner without reducing yourself to insulting people, even in a general term.

If you don't like what's being posted in the forum, you do have options. You can ignore it, you can challenge it in the proper manner, or you can PM the person directly.

It’s about population density. National news know their audience and will play news that effects the majority of their audience. It’s also relative. 5cm of snow in central London is big news as it’s very rare. 5cm of snow in Aberdeen would not even get a mention on the news. It’s a bit like 0c in parts of Norway would be referred to as ‘mild’ in January where as in the Uk it oils be called ‘bitterly cold’ it’s all relative! My point above before this went off on a Tangent was to Kasim about doing his snow warnings and generalizing to a national forum about an ‘event’ when to 90% of the population there was no event.

Hi Tim, I welcome your thoughts, however I am not on here to issue warnings. Firstly that's the Met's job too avoid confusion. Forecasters (pro or not) are here to offer guidance and add in a bit of local knowledge. That's why I'm here, to discuss the meteorological parameters & situation regarding snowfall & therefore snowfall potential. Of course there will always be some room for improvement in accuracy following the event, especially for shortwaves / frontal systems which have a greater tendency to track away from the hi res. So let's not get too caught up in this.

Looking promising tonight for quite a few, Pennine areas above 100m 2-10cm. This covering Yorks, Lancs, Manchester area and nearby. Sway north towards Durham & south towards N.Mids poss I'm favouring a slightly north middle ground for a few reasons. In the area hit expect 60% of the land cover to see snow. This would take the precip through Bradford into Skipton area. On the east coast & up to 30 miles inland <200m there will be an element of marginality. Inland, the Pennines & over to the north west coast may see snow down to sea level temporarily so a patchy 1-4cm at lower levels near the central path & 3-9cm widely on high ground seems reasonable. Again as discussed Bradford path favoured with this

Marginal below 100m altitude means later a sleety mix is possible, however there will still be some opportunity. Again this has room for sway south if the trough throws more energy towards the central Mids.

Folks under the precip in the south we are seeing the hook around. Watch out for this turning to snow

I tell you what’s very unusual here, it’s looking at charts like this!! It’s just so uncommon in this country and even the so called less good charts still bring in the cold, think we are been spoiled here but after the year we have all had think we deserve it. Let’s get some prolonged cold and snow so it can cause chaos everywhere on our locked down roads

Never expected any snow here so no moans from me.

Might get some wet sleety stuff tonight though.

Its the same old rubbish for us here unfortunately. We haven't had more than 1cm of snow on the ground since January 2013. Almost 8 years and counting, it's felt like an eternity!

Ayup all!

follow every year since the 2009/10 medley way back and can only agree that this year is feeling unusual in hopefully the best way possible!??☃️

quick question... (in no way would I even put myself even at amateur level!)

Swept up in all this (as I’m sure 99.9% of us are at the mo) what are the actual viable “consequences” should all things fall exactly into place in terms of what the models are showing?

46/47 62/63 etc etc have been thrown around over the years but almost in a “if only” sense...

are we heading to something similar or maybe even worse if all things fall in place this time round? I mean, what would we ACTUALLY see in front of us should an easterly for real stretched from Russia all the way to Canada?(is that even possible?)

anyway you catch my drift...hopefully?

loving the drama good and bad as always (beats Emmerdale haha!)

keep up the good work everyone ???

im based in North Yorkshire in the Nidderdale valley and it’s been very lack lustre here so far so guess I’m seeking some visions of a winter to remember haha!

There's long been a supposition that the climate was altered by World War Two leading to the 1939/1940 cold spell.

Possibility that the pandemic is causing some global shifts in climate potentially feeding into what could be a severe cold spell to come?

Do these ensemble charts ever come to fruition as it always seem be these charts that are belters?

Slightly get the feeling that if you cherry pick charts they will never come to fruition. Might as well read the Express or Mail. What was all that excitement a week ago?

Be nice to have some careful consideration of all the forecasts, models and charts in a balanced way.
