Could we sneak a colder than normal (1991 - 2019) December with the frosty weather tonight covering the last two days ?

A drop to 5.1c before corrections seems likely now bringing the CET to 4.9c potentially.

Under 5c very possible now, 0c to -4c widely last night.

Last four days are provisionally recorded as 4.4C on the 27th, 1.5C on the 28th, and 1.3C on the 29th and 30th. Wouldn't be surprised to see some adjustments here. I do wonder if they shift the measurement period from 12am-12am to 9am-9am (I think perhaps Roger or someone else has mentioned this before), since the value of 4.4C on the 27th would be consistent with (roughly) an 8C maximum at midnight and a 0C minimum 24 hours later; if the measurement period is shifted then we could see the value for the 27th drop a little.

As for today, maybe we'll record the month's only negative value.

Looks like it may finish up at 4.9c after corrections. Shame the mild spell in the middle cancelled out the cold first and final weeks of the month. I'd suspect if we kept the cold going through the middle or even just average, we'd be close to the upper 2s. Overall its been a interesting month.

Yes, a mixture of milder and colder spells this month -- pretty much exactly what you'd expect from December: the Atlantic has yet to properly quieten down but intrusions of colder air become increasingly likely. Looks like the CET will reflect this, although rainfall will be higher than normal. It's a shame the source air wasn't/isn't colder during the month's colder incursions, with the extreme cold currently bottled up in Siberia. Perhaps a favourable SSW is what's needed to shift it west!

It's very likely the annual CET will be around 10.7C -- either joint-third- or fourth-warmest on record, primarily due to the warm first-half (which, of course, gave way to cooler, cloudier, and wetter weather as soon as restrictions were lifted...).

Extremely cold day here in Essex, high of just 1C and low of -3C. A hard frost over night, the frostt is still there now! One of the coldest days here I imagine, certainly the coldest or joint coldest of this month/year/winter. Shame no snow though despite being forecasted

Today would have dropped it by 0.2 I imagine a strong frost and a cold day for many few seen ice day in SE which is very rare. Easily the coldest day of 2020.

A great way of ending such a horrible year. Hoping for these frosts to continue into Jan

I've already seen more frost and snow this winter than I did throughout the whole of 2019/20!

Yes, the provisional will fall to 5.1, as the current 5.3 is actually 5.27, a value of -0.5 would change that to 157.6/31 or 5.08. That seems unlikely to hold at 5.1 (sadly) but gives me the "dubious double" of two months in a row where I hit the final provisional value. Seems like a very 2020 sort of accomplishment. Happy new year.

At 5.0c December 2020 shares the same mean CET with December's:

1660

1663

1668

1717

1729

1999

Overall CET for 2020 is 10.76 only beaten by 2006 and 2014 with CETs of 10.87 and 10.95 respectively. 3rd warmest year, can't say I'm surprised. With December's CET of 5.0, it makes it milder than average but certainly didn't feel like it. Let's hope 2021 has a different approach in the weather!

So 9 of the 10 warmest years have occurred since 1990.

For this year:
31 days were in the top 10 warmest, 8 of which were daily records.
5 days were in the 10 coldest, but no daily cold records were set.

Only 0.4c out again, not too bad. Happy new year everyone.
