...aaaaand they keep coming, 2005 record now well and truly smashed.

Key Messages: 1. The depression is expected to strengthen to a hurricane while it approaches the coast of Central America, and there is a risk of dangerous wind, storm surge, and rainfall impacts across portions of Nicaragua and Honduras beginning Sunday night. Hurricane Watches will likely be issued for a portion of this area tonight. 2. Through Wednesday morning, heavy rainfall from Tropical Depression Thirty-One may lead to life-threatening flash flooding and river flooding across portions of Haiti, Jamaica and Central America. Flooding and landslides from heavy rainfall could be significant across Central America given recovery efforts underway after Hurricane Eta

Iota (they should have spelt it yota to properly pronounce it as the Greek letter) is now a hurricane and strengthening fast!

Expected to reach major hurricane status before crashing on poor Nicaragua.

Hurricane Iota is now 978mb, 90mph. Expected to make landfall at category 4 strength. Very pretty, very deadly.

Eta on the 2nd Nov, day before landfall CAt4 Nicaragua. Iota due to make landfall tomorrow (Monday) evening local time as a majore hurricane/

NHC discussion  - "Iota is forecast to become a potentially catastrophic category 4 hurricane before it reaches the coast of northeastern Nicaragua or eastern Honduras.

Iota is expected to continue to rapidly intensify and be an extremely dangerous category 4 hurricane when it approaches the coast of Central America on Monday.

Flooding and mudslides in Honduras and Nicaragua could be exacerbated by Hurricane Etas recent effects there, resulting in significant to potentially catastrophic impacts."

IOTA is now a major hurricane.

The N.Atlantic in November has never recorded two major hurricanes before. Eta hit Nicaragua on Tues 3rd, #Iota is forecast to make landfall in northeastern Nicaragua Monday night with catastrophic impacts for Central America.

NHC "The hurricane is in near ideal conditions to continue strengthening until landfall. In an environment of warm 29 C waters, very low wind shear, and a moist air mass..."

Crazy drops in pressure between two recon passes, the type of drop I've only seen in a handful of occasions in my 16 years in this site.

Now down to 935mbs which is a 10mb drop in less than an hour. The presentation of Iota is impressive and no doubts still intensifying.

Next recon in about 6hrs time should be very interesting, legitimate shot at a cat-5 if it can stay away from EWRC.

What a sickener for the region so soon after Eta. It looks at least like it will move through quicker but that's not saying much, and in absolute terms it's still not moving very fast.

Absolutely heartbreaking for a region that has barely even come out of the woodwork after Eta. Could be some devastating scenes after this I’m afraid. Unprecedented.

It's hitting almost exactly where Eta hit a few weeks ago, scary. We haven't seen a category 5 in November before but that may be about to change.

I see the forecast wind speeds are 165MPH plus.

Have we had anything near that or exceeding that speed this season?

Iota is the first November category 5 hurricane since 1932 and the latest ever to form in the Atlantic. Remarkable considering the official end date for an Atlantic hurricane season is now exactly 2 weeks away.

Puerto Cabezas is in big trouble. It would only take a slight realignment to the north for the worst of Iota to hit the town (EDIT - if the above image is accurate, it's already on course to do so). They've already taken damage from Eta as well.

It's unusual to see such powerful hurricanes not only in November but also this far south. Joan (1988) made landfall along the southern Nicaraguan coast at Cat. 4 strength. Bluefields took a direct hit and was almost completely destroyed.

Yikes, I expected a marginal category 4 last night.
