A super day for ski-ing yesterday. However, very warm windy conditions today. Current temp in the village is +11c and at 2000m leve+ 7 c.

Just had a fantastic 3 days skiing in Whistler as part of a trip to Canada to see my daughter who lives near Vancouver. It was my first visit to the resort and I have to say I was very impressed, with a large selection of bars, restaurants and - most importantly - mountain side to ski. And some of the trail (piste) names were memorable - very different to the norm found in Alps. How about Where's Joe, Rock and Roll, Rat Fink, Banana Peel and Dave's Day Off.

The resort centre: 478589847_WhistlerVillage1.thumb.jpg.949176e1ce16ac48b2cb8656b6980d7d.jpg 342192155_WhistlerVillage2.thumb.jpg.bfd809739d8e0927c6e93291835eaf68.jpg

The Peak to Peak cable car linking the two skiing areas of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountain was very impressive, with some of the cabins even boasting glass bottom floors. These pics taken travelling from Blackcomb Mountain over to Whistler in the distance:

Finally, a few more pics from around the mountain:

Nearly 9 hours of ☀ today with perfect conditions. Looking forward to a meet up again on Saturday with the remnants of the old Gatwick Caledonian Ski team for a 2 week jolly in the mountains.

It's wonderful to be back in Val Cenis in the French Alps for a week's skiing. The last time I was here was March 2020 and we broke off from the holiday a day early as the Covid pandemic struck France. The next day (Saturday) France closed all ski resorts and arrivals had to literally turn-around and go home.

It's been a beautiful week with wall-to-wall sunshine every day, although temperatures in the village (1,450m) have been well above freezing and today +10C. Snow conditions (on and off piste) are hard packed after an extended period without fresh snow fall. Whilst the northern/eastern Alps have seen plenty of snow falling courtesy of the semi-resident UK high pressure this winter, the southern French Alps and Italy have fared badly.

A few pics. I've included the first one to illustrate the lack of snow on the opposite side of the valley.

Thankfully no skiing on these south facing slopes: 2114693923_VCvalley.thumb.jpg.415b683e66dcfd6689dd69f4ea3668ff.jpg

Where I spent too much time  up at 2,100m: 1890060030_VCTerrace.thumb.jpg.766d6031f8dcddadaf42c2c8b43d3edb.jpg

Plenty of good skiing though: 1934394271_VCRhodos.thumb.jpg.858f1e41dce6d49ced25bacf38d14ede.jpg1259716947_VCBowl.thumb.jpg.f6b3b0ec9a0f9895e02cf2b5ba0d7229.jpg

Stunning view towards Italy from the top station: 866295369_VCItaly.thumb.jpg.d095f19d43a110dce2ddbcd93aaea8c1.jpg

A celebration of the completion of the 12 Peaks Trophy from Zauchensee to Alpendorf in the heart of SKI AMADE. Its has been a vintage season in these parts with good snow cover right up to present. Plenty of sunshine over the past two weeks and full restrictions lifted on the 5 th March with Apre back in full swing. Great value for you Brits if visiting in the run up to Easter with £/EURO exchange more favourable. Thats it now for the ski-ing and back in Blighty for a while after leaving the chaos of Salzburg Airport this last Saturday !

Anyway, cheers to next season.

Over and out .

This picture just posted from resort. Sahara Dust makes for a weird appearance in the Austrian Alps.

Just found this picture taken in Megeve. I am informed was back in 1968. Just look at the length of those skis . I know my first pair of skis I learnt to ski on back in 1976  were Fischers brand and they were much longer than todays easy carvers but nothing like as long as on that photo !

I learnt to ski on much longer skis than anyone has now, I had Dynastar 210's at one point in the early 80s

I found this old picture of the children taken back in the mid 8Os on a family ski holiday for our first visit to Malbun in Liechtenstein. Went back there several times. A nice high resort with easy ski-ing. That  guy playing the Accordion  , I am told , taught King Charles 3rd how to ski when he made a visit as a young Prince to Malbun way back in 1965.  A small world. By  the way he only played if you bought him a beer !

Yuk. Womens giant Slalom , first of the season, cancelled due to abnormal warm conditions in the high resort of Solden. Think this could be a first. Not a good sign.

I’ve got a few days vacation coming up in end of November and decided to ski in Norway for a short break.

Has anyone been skiing there ? What’s it like compared to the Alps ?

Yes, I skied there about 30 years ago at a resort called Hemsedal. Sort of ski in -out resort. Ski-ing was surprisingly good but can get bleak without much sunshine. Although beer was expensive in the hotel the resort was good value for money. Obviously not the long runs of the Alps but pretty well snow assured and runs long enough for a short break.

Now that I’ve moved to the UAE the nearest skiing to here is Georgia, Armenia and Turkey. Does anyone know anything about the resort’s in  these places….I know that they are significantly cheaper than the alps…and that they are also very high, with resort level being near  to 2000m in some…

I have never skied in Tigne but really like this photo of The Grand Motte and what looks like Cirrus Stratus cloud cover.

Sunday morning on the piste. This is the end piste of the World Cup run close to the village. Looks like some keen skiers have poled up for a early morning run !

My son is currently on a ski instructor course in Kaprun. This was his view this morning from up at the glacier.

I'm very envious!
