Very strange seeing such cold temperatures in what is a very mediocre cold spell for most of the UK - certainly no widespread deep cold like December 2010.

There has been 4 days of deep cold pooling in Highland Scotland combined with deep snow cover and little wind to stir the surface layer. We now have very light winds, perfect recipe for very cold minima.

England and Wales have had too much wind, and no time for any deep cold pooling, only now, if winds were to stay light through tomorrow night then some very low minima would be expected alas winds are to pick up.

The lowest official temperature I have seen for England was back on January 9th.

Not seen anything confirmed lower than this? Maybe I missed it!

Redesdale Camp -11.1C on 09/01/21.

Thanks, yes official current low I think. Someone said Shap was on -9 degrees a few hours ago, might expect it to go below -11 degrees. Redesdale Camp tonight too exposed to the wind. Parts of East Anglis around the Wash expected to hit -10 degrees.

Is it at all possible that the all time Scottish record minima could be in danger tonight?

to beat -27.2 is a stretch. i'd expect it to come close to the 2010 figure. There is a small possibility of it beating that, thus making it the coldest temperature since 1995

No. Not likely to get near it but the coldest this century is doable. -22.3Cin Dec 2010 at Altnaharra. Only other year since 2000 under -20C was 2001 in March at Kinbrace.

Talking about Kinbrace, this is what the MetO tweeted an hr ago. Also, this is what is currently on their website. Looks like a below -20c is possible

Kinbrace and Braemar have both dropped below the -20C mark. How low can they go?

Interestingly they did a little photo feature after the weather on BBC news and there isn’t that much snow in Altnaharra. It’s usually said that for the coldest night time minima you need fresh deep snow but it would appear that a covering is enough. Nudged gradually down to -8 here with barely any snow. Snow definitely helps getting it down below -10 quickly when the sun drops.

Very good going, don't think many saw such low temperatures, -20 degrees was expected. The fact we have beaten Jan 2010 and Dec 2010 is very noteworthy.

Since 1875 only 1879, 1881, 1895, 1910, 1919, 1940, 1955, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1985 and 1995 have recorded lower temperatures. I’m not sure how cold it got in February 1979/1985 but we could be looking at the coldest February temperature since 1955 and potentially the second coldest since 1895. Absolutely remarkable!

Quite incredible!

-22.9C recorded in Braemar this morning is our lowest February minimum temperature since 1955!
That was Braemar once again! -25C on 23/02/1955.

The fact that we can still beat old temp records in a warming world is very noteworthy.

Good morning Mr. F... I was living in the Highlands when the -27.2C was recorded: no power, frost on the inside walls, burst pipes; living, when daytime maxima barely get above -18C is nae easy... I really do feel for the Muscovites!
