Well that was an interesting journey, what is usually a 15 minute car ride to drop my mum off at Ayr hospital from annbank turned into well over an hour. Very heavy snow throughout and some lightning in the distance which was from Irvine, heard from friends that it sounded like an explosion cars getting stuck everywhere from annbank, very treacherous and multiple hairy moments. Winter has well and truly arrived in Ayrshire

Photo was after 5 minutes of snow, at least 2 inches now

Great to see the snow pics rolling in and glad you saw some @Kirkcaldy Weather 
I think we had some sleet rattling off the windows for a while here in Pittenweem  but it’s currently +5c so any wintriness has long gone.

Looks like we had heavy snow before it turned to rain. Nice to look at for a few hours before it melts.

I'm surprised that it didn't really turn to rain here. Almost heavy snow throughout. Bit of drizzly pish as the ppn died out but nowhere near what was forecast.

Non event here other than thunder again around 1am. Still got a dusting from yesterday, and was down to - 2 last night.

It snowed from about 4am, and there's a slushy covering again, not sure how that's all we got given the radar but oh well,  can't complain too much with the start to winter  Looks like the M74 is closed due to the weather, not surprised! There must be a few cars and lorries stuck up there this morning.

Mix of rain and snow overnight. Snow was pretty heavy at 6am and was very white outside. Suggestions on social media of some lightning and thunder but I must have slept through that. Roads very difficult early on but looks like a rapid thaw setting in now.

Good effort here, snow lasted longer than I expected. Good dose of thunder snow and lightning aswell that woke us up at 6am.

Well glad my scepticism wasn't that well founded! A decent covering here although it's starting to melt (which does seem sadly inevitable today).

 

A great way to kick off the winter.

Taking a closer look at the upper air temperatures they were, if anything, warmer than forecast - some -1Cs in the mix as the main front passed over.  

 

It was really the intensity of the precipitation that kept it mostly as snow - such a deep low and associated front enhanced by North Sea convection really produced, and without a surface easterly it was cold enough for it to stick.

We had a top-up of 14cm, but it's packing down quickly in the drizzle. It stopped snowing about 7am but it was sleet from about 6am. Carpe diem!!!

Was actually a pretty decent fall of snow around 4am but its rapidly melting now thanks to a temperature of 3c and sporadic bursts of moderate to heavy rain.

Obligatory photos of the slushfest.  Still, that is better than what amounted to snowfall last winter.

Mayhem in Fife this morning, been up since 4 dealing with accidents... thundersnow was awesome!. 3 degrees now, slush and flooding.. mc donalds down and back out there.

Snowy dog walk and commute this morn, A9 was fun

Inverness- Elgin drive was utterly dire with torrential rain, wind and surface water. Used to seeing those conditions when in Harris, not coastal moray. Hopeful for winter, good to see happy snow people elsewhere

Colder last night and a bit more snow but more of a decent start than a momentous occasion.

Temperature 2.8deg.C up from -2.2deg.C at 00:24, humidity 96%, wind 1 to 3mph northwesterly with a maximum gust of 11mph at 5am, pressure 981.4hPa rising, rain hasn't recorded because it fell as snow, dew point 2deg.C and cloud cover is 8/8.
