They suck at picking out streamers etc..ive had numerous surprise snowfalls from the east when the high res models have failed to pick them up..

Take tonight for example that stuff over Kent the only model really right with it is Arpege and its got it right turning to snow.. Some people now reporting its falling as snow

Most models have some precip over kent ? Just checked 3 and all 3 have it

found Arome which has this below for early Monday.

I believe for a Thames streamer we would need a NE wind direction.

I think NE is a Kent Streamer and E is a Thames Streamer.

The point of a streamer is that the wind picks up convection from the warm sea over a decent distance and then dumps it as snow further downwind.

When the 2009 Streamer Hit we did an analysis post on the 4 Types of Streamers to affect our little part of the Planet

1. NNE Is the East and Mid Kent Streamer when showers moved through the Ashford to Folkestone Area

2. NE Affects more areas including parts of Essex and Medway and can also penetrate into SE and NE London

3. ENE is the true Thames Streamer which affect the Southern Coast of Essex and runs WSW through to South London and can reach parts of Surrey and Hampshire a la 2009

4. ESE this streamer actually affects North and North West London and can go as far as Beds, Bucks etc

More of a ENE/E for a Thames streamer that affects all of Greater London and south Essex/Herts. Too much of a NE’rly element and ur can sometimes only affect parts of Kent, SE Essex and fringing SE London.

I always look for a flow between NE and ENE for me. Also need strong temperature differences and lower heights to ensure they reach me

Great summary. I remember in Feb 2009, being in NE London I was getting very frustrated in the early part of the night as most of the snow was funnelling through south London and into Surrey. A change of wind direction in the early hours to more a ENE/E direction brought all parts of the capital into it. By the morning we had a good 6 inches of snow - not as much as S London but a damn sight better than the dusting we had until the change in wind direction.
