Storm Bella will smash into SE England tomorrow night between 12-3am .. massive dangerous storm ..amber warning from the Met Office ..will be the weather rstoury of the year

Is that based on max gusts or sustained wind.

Please be gusts.

I think it is for Saturday / Sunday.  Not looking great, although exciting for us weather freaks

I think for reasons of clarity is that the headline wind speeds are gusts.

The infamous storm of 1987, which happened when trees were in full leaf, recorded a sustained wind speed of 86mph, the highest gust recorded was 134mph.  We're looking about half that for Bella.

Storm Bella will be "an event", there are a lot of flood warnings, some weaker trees and branches may fall, however, the worst will happen overnight at a time when very few people are out and about. Much of England is in Lockdown anyway now.  I think most of us will escape without damage if we've secured our gardens and plan to stay indoors. I think further flooding will be the biggest headline sadly.

Morning

After a low of -0.7c around 5am, temperature has risen steadily ahead of storm Bella; now 4.8c

What is interesting though, is that Monday’s low is forecast by some to exit over the SE, potentially giving snow to some. I think it’ll come down to a nowcasting, lamppost watching day, but nice there’s is potential interest for some of us ⛄

The 2nd consecutive sunny Christmas Day here, but in the late evening this year, there was a well marked total lunar halo; A sign of a deterioration no doubt.

Hi all

looks as though we may miss out on Mondays snowfall excitement as I see that the Met Office have issued warnings for snow and ice around the Wales and Liverpool area (basically the north west coastal area)

Normally a sign the air above is cold and full of ice crystals.

If storm Bella was weaker, and slid through at a different angle, she would have been a snow event, for many.

How ever there will be opportunities latter on, once she's done.

Bit of an eerie day today; birds really active (unlike me, over indulging in cheese, turkey and ham).  Tonight's storm really does have the potential to pack a punch, doesn't it? Then, hoping that with our elevation, we may see a little winteriness on Monday.  Enjoy your Boxing Day x

Drizzly rain here, big change from yesterdays Sunny Frosty weather. Lots of talk of snow on Monday. Its not going to happen here. The ground is far to wet. We need the Beast from the East. Hope u are all having a nice christmas. Should get dark nice and early tonight with the rain. Time to put another log on the fire and top up that Festive drink. Take care best of health to you all.

Still quite calm here in NE Essex but in the last few minutes you can hear winds aloft, just had our first meaningful gust.

If it gets cold enough, and falls hard enough there’s no such thing as the ground being too wet. Gone to bed and it’s been pouring rain, woken to half a foot of snow.
However, do not see that happening Monday as it’ll be rain for most.

Winds not much right now, but feels colder than yesterday even though the temps are higher. Does anybody know if the winds could be bad near the east Anglia coast? Or is it just further south that could be damaging?

I want to stay up and see how windy it gets tonight but its looking like that wont be until 2-3 in the morning. I dont have any hard drugs to keep me awake, does anyone want to poke me with pins once every half hour? Alcohol and food for 2 whole days has rendered me somewhat drowsy....

Windy ? woo here, whistling down the chimney and rattling the letterbox we have no shelter from our old leaky porch, it had been ripped down and half rebuilt before the builder went off with COVID. , thankfully he is asymptomatic and returned to work just before Christmas. Hope it stays upright..! Stay safe folks.

winds really picking up here in RTW. Severe drizzle atm. Stronger winds expected over the next 6-10 hours.

Not seriously expecting any wintriness before the new year now.

Well this place has taken a strange turn since I last visited

Momentarily back in the real world, winds are certainly on the increase down here on the coast in East Sussex. Earlier than originally predicted as well so obviously an evolving situation.
