My favourite day of the whole year.    Yawns and then stretches..

Who will be first to spot the lowland snow in Siberia?

Am I correct in thinking we rank third for ice to this date.

Still in snooze mode...

Depends upon measurement. (extent, area of volume)

Most have it as second lowest in the Arctic, but it is around 13th lowest in the Antarctic.  (for 20th century).

The Arctic was decimated (from a reasonable position) by the clear anticyclone slap over the pole in the peak insolation of the summer months.   (June and July)

Arctic will not reach first position (2012) but may struggle to improve from its current position before minimum.  (2 - 3weeks normally)

While that high didn't help matters I'm sure its not the only time that a high was slap bang over the pole during june and july. A warmer climate is the  real true cause sadly.

Plus wasnt there a massive storm which destroyed a lot of ice around Canada and Greenland in early July?

Could be interesting year.  Greenland SMB looking healthy enough with some interesting spiking.  Lots of cold airmass forecast to sit over it ahead.

Well all hopes are resting on a decent UK winter this year as its looking unlikely that a trip to the Alps for my usual 'backup' snow fix is going to happen. Covid-19 combined with a wet, wild mudfest of a UK winter would be hard to bear.

Looks like the precip will start to turn more and more wintry overnight tonight in Iceland weather warnings issued “northerly blizzard, Northerly gale or severe gale, 15-20 m/s and heavy precipitation. Temperatures will be close to freezing and therefore there will likely be sleet above 200 m altitude and snow above 400 m. The weather is likely to cause deteriorating road conditions on mountain roads. People are advised to show caution.” https://en.vedur.is/alerts

Abnormal amount but I think snow around September-October is fairly normal.

Well, that's what most of us had to endure during summer 2020.

A decent sunny spring, replaced by a poor cloudy summer, so not going to Spain, and I was rewarded with this. Mustn't grumble though, I enjoyed the few days down on the south coast, and made the best of some hotel breaks outside london.

Try and think of an alternative to the alps. How about the Scottish Highlands, or Lake District.  Not saying it will guarantee you snow, but a change of scene is always good.

Sep 1, 2008 - I was in the Canadian Rockies. It had been 32/33oC in the previous days then dropped to 2oC with 3/4 inches of snow. So though not that unusual for the Rockies (nor that frequent mind) The US like to do things to extreme lol
