Day 1 Convective Outlook

VALID 06:00 UTC Wed 16 Dec 2020 - 05:59 UTC Thu 17 Dec 2020

ISSUED 07:31 UTC Wed 16 Dec 2020

ISSUED BY: Dan

Outbreaks of rain with embedded line convection will continue to migrate northeastwards across the British Isles through Wednesday. The main attention turns to the post-frontal environment where a zone of steeper mid-level lapse rates tracks eastwards through the afternoon across Ireland, and then Britain through the evening and night. Numerous showers are likely to develop over seas, and drift inland on the southwesterly steering winds - and so the main focus will be southern and western coasts exposed to the onshore wind. The greatest risk of a few isolated lightning strikes is probably over the English Channel and into southern coastal counties of England on Wednesday night, where some rather squally winds will also be possible.

The BBC weather for the week ahead on CountryFile suggests that Western parts of the UK may be in for a bit of a blow on Wednesday.

No more than a normal December 'blow' today here in S Cheshire, but perhaps worse on the Western seaboards.  A BBC yellow weather warning for rain now been issued for Friday in the South West of England and Wales.

There’s a squall line currently passing through my location. Got some mad structure to it.

Day 1 Convective Outlook

VALID 06:00 UTC Sat 19 Dec 2020 - 05:59 UTC Sun 20 Dec 2020

ISSUED 09:40 UTC Sat 19 Dec 2020

ISSUED BY: Dan

Negatively-tilted upper trough will slowly swing northeastwards across the British Isles on Saturday, with a significant cold pool aloft atop relatively warm SSTs. Steep mid-level lapse rates and 300-600 J/kg CAPE will drive numerous showers into exposed southern and western coasts, feeding well-inland on southwesterly steering winds and organised troughs/occlusions in the flow. The risk of lightning will generally be greatest close to the coast, where a few low-end SLGTs (25-30% chance) have been introduced. Many of the showers will likely produce hail and gusty winds, and given strong shear present across E / SE England on Saturday afternoon then this poses the threat for more organised convection further inland, with squally winds and hail possible.

Storm on this cam. Not a lot of thunder but occasional rumbles on there. Quite a loud one at 15:19

It's an absolute CB fest to my south. I can see around 7 or 8 of them. Just hoping one of them electrifies.

It was a good hour or so ago and tracked up towards Crowborough and tunbridge wells,it's what's in the Thames estuary now. But a nice little line forming to the west of west Sussex now!

Just seen a very bright flash - so bright that it reflected off some of the lower-level clouds. Awaiting the power of it on Meteologix..
