What is the difference between the met office thunderstorm warnings and a lightning warning?

I can note one similarity - they are usually both incredibly unreliable

I'd say a thunderstorm warning the primary threat is thunder with a few lightning C-G strikes possible, whereas a Lightning warning probably focuses more towards C-G strikes. I could be wrong though.

Loads of thunder near me, saw a few flashes.

I wonder if that's what myself and @Smartie in WSM can hear in the distance. Have heard several rumbles now.

May be. It's dying down a bit now, but I'd say we heard a good 10 loud rumbles of thunder and I saw 4 lightning strikes to accompany.

Must be some nice anvil crawlers in that storm I suspect if lightningmaps.org is going crazy with just a single strike?!

Edit: Just seen the top left corner... 141 strikes per minute

Yeah no word of a lie the largest flash of lightning I have ever seen. Thunder was immense.

But if thunder was the primary threat they’d probably just issued a rain warning for ‘thundery rain’ plus thunder isn’t really a threat to anyone it’s just sound

Hi gang ,5 brilliant flashes over the last 10 minutes here on west mendip. Rain torrential , looks like a line of intense rain approaching here ,only heard the thunder twice it appears to be further east than Winscombe .probably 22 mm in the last 5 hrs or so .Tomorrow looking good for some if theres a few sunny breaks , got a gut feeling some very newsworthy weather about ,stay safe , rain now very torrential and lightning becoming frequent, cheers .

Now that you've said it, it won't.

The rainfall ahead of that squall (if that's what it'd be classed as) is heading more NE. If the squall follows that pattern then I could get an unexpected little thundery treat later

Any action for the south east?

There's definitely a chance this evening, but don't bite my head off if it all misses you! Arome favours you.

It's very much a case of keep your eye on the radar and lightning maps over the next few hours, and like Dan mentioned, showers in the channel are possible south of the rain band which could turn thundery and could clip the SE
