bbc weather and weather.com appear to differentiate for my area, both show the final week markedly cooler, but tempreatures are varying, as low as 14C on some days by BBC with the lowest on Weather.com being 16C. And what do you mean last autumn wasn't decent? I found last autumn to be one of the best. Was pretty cool. Lots of frost as the months progressed. Though even though the tempreatures may not have dropped yet, the trees are looking autumnal much earlier than last year. Worth pointing out last september we also had quite a few warm days in the later days of the month.

After the equinox, last autumn was a rainfest with occasional better interludes. We can do a lot better. 2018 was a much more enjoyable autumn overall imo.

Was it? Depends on what you like. September was nice, October had that extremely warm spell at the start which I didn't particuarly like, had it been a month earlier it would have been okay. December was on the mild side, but in January it got very cold. I'd rather have a warm or mild autumn and then a cold winter rather than have a cool autumn and a rubbish winter. knowing our luck we'll get the worst of both this year

A return of summer here although it’s a bit on the breezy side.

It was nice and sunny, but a little chilly on the beach in Bexhill, due to a nagging breeze. Was 20c down on the coast, so not warm enough to wear shorts, and while I did walk around in a t shirt, I was glad to have my light jacket to hand.

It definitely feels like summer is coming to an end now, and the freshness in the air has returned to those April, early May levels.

I didn’t like either, but most autumns and winters, even when leading to a mild season, will still produce cold sunny days.

I would love a 2017/18 autumn, winter season.

Thankfully its looking like that dirty unseasonable continental air will have gone by mid week week to be replaced by a much better fresher pattern. Cooler nights, dry, pleasant sunshine, not bad at all for a Autumnal September.

Actually the wind direction will be switching from southerly to easterly which is still continental, but it will be cooler.

I would take a repeat of Autumn 2019 - glorious stuff up here during October and November but was severely lacking in the gales/severe gales department. (One of the quietest October/November periods I can ever remember)

Both months came in below average, sunshine duration above average and very dry also.

October delivered some wintry showers in the final week of the month - lovely cloudscapes during my local October hill walks.

All the best everyone!

Repeat of last Autumn would be perfect for me - October and especially November very dry, sunny and cold! (See post above)

Also agree with @Sunny76 regarding Winter 2017/18 - one I will never forget! (See posts below)

Well yes I'd rather that combo too, but regardless of anything else, incessant rain doesn't interest me much and last autumn had plenty of that. The worst thing... it continued until late March!

At least 2018 had plenty of bright and often sunny autumnal weather, obviously of the warm or occasionally very warm variety early on, then the cold spell in late October and again in November, interspersed with an unsettled Atlantic spell in the first of November which included a few thunder days here.

Likewise, 2017 had its moments too, but that year it was more about November onwards as September was garbage and October quite nondescript.

Gosh, sounds like last autumn was very different where you were to down here!

Here it was just cool/chilly, cloudy and wet (typical Lancashire weather). October and November was just a miserable rainfest. Don't remember much frost, just lots of cloud, rain and 5-15C days. The only thing we had in common was the lack of wind, that didn't get going until December when we switched to a mild zonal pattern.

Autumn 2018 was much more enjoyable for me.

Yes I agree. I enjoyed Autumn 2018 much more than Autumn 2019. Autumn 2019 was just a rainfest here apart from a few sunny days in mid September. The rest was just 5-13°C days and rain/cloud. There wasn't even many gales/wind storms, which made it even more boring.

Autumn 2018 had a good mix of warmer and cooler spells, it also had a lot of bright and sunny weather and wasn't too wet. Overall it was mild but didn't always feel it after we had got used to high temperatures after the hot summer that year.

Im really surprised at that, considering you get cold really easily. No offence, but I can't imagine how you could cope with a cold winter.

September 2017 - March 2018 was a horrible period of weather for me. We had a deluge September with no warmth whatsoever, a mild but very dull October and then November- March was just freezing cold most of the time. Okay, there were a few milder spells, but most of the time I was shivering with my coat on. I slipped and fell on ice twice in that winter.

I enjoyed the beast from the east, just because of how exceptional it was - the thick snow, sub zero maxima and frigid easterly winds.  I remember one day I kept taking my gloves off to take snow pictures but my hands just got colder and colder. Then in the garden there were icicles hanging off the shed and I dared myself to touch it - with my BARE HANDS. Big mistake as my hands were actually hurting it was so cold and I had to put my hands in warm water to stop it. As much as I enjoyed it, it was absolutely baltic and I was glad it only lasted a few days. It was a relief when May 2018 came around and we got lots of warm, dry and sunny weather.

I enjoyed winter 2018/19 and winter 2019/20 much better, despite the lack of snow.

I'm a snow lover yes, but baltic winds, air frost, ice - can't stand it!

Indeed - clearly see the difference on the Met Office charts I posted.

It will be interesting to see how this month turns out - ECM seasonal went for a below average September! (UK wide temperatures)

Could be a cool/chilly final week to end the month.

Before all that...decent weather up here for the week ahead!

I can't cope with a wet October/November like last year. It destroyed the football season here in the South West Peninsula League and my club Saltash United by March had only played 17 league games out of 38!

Just awful every Saturday without fail.

The pattern of drought-deluge-drought appears to continue. What happened to regular rainfall?

September is showing that once again it's one of the best months of the year. Plenty of pleasant warmth but without the unpleasantness of summer (warm nights, very early daylight and strong sunlight).

September is quite unique when it’s like this. No other month would you get mid twenties with the sun strength of mid-late March.

I don’t mind the cold, but I don’t like cold or cooler weather in the warmer seasons of the year. I can tolerate a cold frosty day in December, but hate a cool rainy one in June, when I expect the heat.

Some of those things apply to the latter half of August too so meh. And morning fog isn’t something I’d associate with autumn here - it’s pretty common from March to June as well if we get a slack easterly flow. If anything I’d say fog is least common from July to September.

The foliage doesn’t really start changing until the back end of the month. I would consider it unusual for leaves to turn at this point.

I know, I'm messing lol. Mid August to mid September is it's own month in some ways. We both of course get different conditions from different setups. I think the main thing re the fog is that if it does turn up in summer, it's often burnt off before I'm even up lol, whereas today it was still around gone 9am. Re the foliage, it's more the mucky green/brown hue that the leaves take on further into August, rather than full on autumn colour. It's just not that summery vibrancy anymore. Having said that, there are a few early turners round here that are definitely in autumn mode. I always see them driving so never get photos sadly.

Back to today, and this must be the warmest I've felt in September for many many years, perhaps since 2006. In 2016 I was confined to an air conditioned office so didn't benefit.

Fantastic weather here today, beautiful warm sunshine but you can definitely feel the weaker sun compared to a few weeks ago.

Yes despite the warmth and sunshine, it does feel different to what it felt like in early to mid August. The sun is not as strong now.
