If you have been watching bird parents during lockdown you will have noticed how busy they are, over weeks that have luckily been warm and sunny. The fluffy fledgelings are leaving but the weather can be an ongoing battle.

The Magpies and Jays  have been busy killing everything round here.  Trashing eggs and fledglings. So many parents of the nicer birds having hysterics. I am sure the Chris Packham is proud of them.  Objectionable man.

I've had some good successes in my garden  this last couple of weeks.  A nest box full of Blue Tits did well and several batches of

Blackbirds in the hedge.  Nearby fledglings of Greenfinches and Goldfinches as well as the more common sparrows and starlings .

The Swifts are just taking over the ridge tiles from the sparrows and starlings for their eggs.

The wood pigeons did have their eggs taken by Rooks though in their very open nest .

I've been helping the parent birds lots by putting food out and keeping the fresh water going .

Same here.  I have a wood at the bottom of my garden so birds aplenty and I could see some distressed blackbirds the other day with cackling nauseating magpies.  The magpies are a menace - they even appear to terrorise the Jays.  I love wildlife I truly do but would happily employ someone to shoot the magpies if I could - horrid destructive cruel birds.    I have feeders up water always available.  I even have a nuthatch visiting the seeder - he feeds upside down and makes an awful mess under the seeder

Yes shooting a few does help.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
