Can everyone just chill. It’s not even midnight. Watching from the hills near Portsmouth and when is does flash that stuff in the channel is lighting up a huge sheet of rain headed this way.

There also a band of showers now developing across Dorset and Somerset, headed NE. There will be embedded storms in this and it will most likely become very active as the night/morning progresses.

Stormchasing is a waiting game. Watching, waiting, wondering and taking in the majesty of it all...

Stop calling a bust so early!

As mentioned already, even the rain isn't that bad, and  should be out of the way soon, then I'll have a better view of the new cells that have just developed near Cherbourg

think your chances will be better afternoon / evening

I’d love you to be right but sadly the wind veers westerly in the afternoon which is usually a convection killer around here. We will see.

Had a strike 20 km away according to blitz but false return I’m guessing.

It’s infrequent at the moment, but I love watching distant flashes in the channel like this. They really are quite powerful bolts even through from where I am I can’t see any lol

How far over from Godalming have you come, Portsdown?

I remember Portsdown hill, I used Togo through with mum to collect dad from work.  There were white cliffs not far from there, rumoured some sort of base under those but I don’t know .  Loved south sea common and watching the hover crafts coming in. Great vantage points up at portsdown.

Im now in Somerset Frome, feels very humid here , no rain or storms at the moment but feels ripe for a good storm .

Good of luck everyone .

Throwing in the towel now. It's a 45 min drive back home and I'm not waiting for that pathetic Cherbourg cell which won't get here till 4am (if it even makes it at all!)

Yikes, where are you currently?

I wouldn't count out some cells developing anywhere in the channel at the moment, once this rain has cleared we should have a better idea

Looking at my app, it's giving 51% chance of a storm here at 8am tomorrow. Unless it increases to 90%, I won't expect anything, this area's terrible for storms.

latest MetO rainfall prediction looks quite bleak if I’m honest shows that mess in the channel dying off very soon and some well scattered showers/storms by 7am in the S/SE and into east anglia, don’t know how intense they’ll be.  let’s see what happens though

A strike in Southampton showing on lightning maps. Is that a false one?
