Not quite the hard white frosty scene hoped to wake up to, too much wind and patchy cloud, alas it is a fine cold winters day. Reports of heavy snow showers over and to the east of the Pennines, wind direction is not favourable to Cumbria, but some parts of Pennine areas of region could see some cover in the next hour.

Tonight is forecast brrr, widespread air frost and it will be slow to clear tomorrow. A lovely starry night ahead, look forward to waking up to a frosty scene. Next few days are set to bring winter in all its vagaries, sunshine, frost, heavy rain, gales, then perhaps widespread snow?

May well be being a touch pessimistic but whilst we are now looking at a decent cold spell with frost and the chance of snow (some surprise falls too I bet looking at what’s happened over in the NE this morning) we aren’t despite all the ramping from some looking at a big freeze just yet but like Dec 2017 it may well prove to be starter before the main course and a main course delivered in the mid winter too - here’s hoping anyway! Happy Xmas and chart/ lamppost watching to all! ✨ ☃️

Hard frost this morning in Bacup. Then some very light snow - I thought I’d set fire to the chimney again!  But it was snow flakes!!

A few flurries of snow here to report although there's not many flakes falling from the sky, but looking out the window at the local hills disappearing as the flurries pass over is a nice escape away from watching the news.

Hoping this pesky cloud goes away. It will

ruin our frost for tomorrow!! No snow to report here.

A few snapshots from the latest ICON for Sunday, doesn't look much but would be nice to at least see some falling snow.

A few flurries earlier today and it's just dipped below freezing here @ -0.3C. It's going to be very chilly by sunrise.

Some parts of the NW region forecast to be down to -6 overnight - so good to be finally waking up to a frosty seasonal Christmas Day morning instead of a 'Green/Grey' mild one.  Storm Bella strutting her stuff on Boxing Day but then hopefully some wintery prospects to follow in her path.  Not expecting too much, the one's who are going 'Boom' and 'We're going to get burried' in the mod thread set their expectations far too high.

Wishing all members of the region a 'Merry Christmas' ??

No white Christmas tomorrow, but a nice day in prospect with a lovely clear frosty start to the day, probably sunny for the most part and dry throughout daylight hours at least. Perfect for walking off the days excesses.

Merry Christmas all and best wishes for the new year.

Just had a Chinese Take-out. I had sweet and sour mix with egg fried rice, courtesy of Christmas Eve. It tasted gorgeous!! Tommorow we having Three Bird Roast for my Christmas dinner.

Just bone dry and clear skies here. I expect some harsh frost here before Storm Bella come knocking our doors by the Xmas weekend, then the cold returns hopefully it comes back with snow with it!!

Merry Christmas Everyone!!

Buxton got down to -2/3'c overnight with the air temperature a little colder than that, a deep-frost across all surfaces outside but with a nice sunrise to start the day with.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
