Little storm just developed off the coast of N France

Could potentially have my name on it if it survives.

...who am I kidding?

That was a rather dramatic 5-10 mins of weather, torrential rain and strong winds didn't observe any thunder or lightning though.

Its too warm aloft and profiles up the column are too saturated for lightning hence the high rainfall totals and PWAT values

Probably going to be the same with the East Anglia Clipper tonight.

Tomorrow looks much better

12z Camborne ascent highlights the issues - limited instability (couple hundred J/kg CAPE), saturated through the convective layer and not particularly cold equilibrium level temperatures (-15C or so). Enough instability to generate convection, plenty of moisture available for heavy rain, but just not quite enough 'oomph' to generate lightning. Quite finely-balanced, especially considering the rain rates and lack of lightning...

Try to use the ECM, Arome, UKV if you can as they have much better results

Pretty surprised with how the BBC have confidently worded this for the weather tomorrow. No doubt it'll change by tomorrow so take with a pinch of salt. This is for the East Midlands;

"Sunny spells at first but cloud is likely to bubble up, giving heavy showers and thunderstorms. Locally this may be intense with hail, gusty winds and frequent lightning."

For an actual radar:

MO_Master_W.jpg
WWW.METOFFICE.GOV.UK

UK rainfall radar map.

For a good model site to get you started, google 'Wxcharts'

12mm of rain in as many minutes here as that line went through. Heaviest rain since 1st May - was quite impressive being blown about. Now back to overcast skies and calm again.

Hi Supacell,

Am considering chasing tomorrow also, do you have any particularly good spots across W Midlands into Wales with good access routes etc. I'm thinking maybe positioning around the Shropshire AONB area? Maybe further north towards Shrewsbury. What's your thinking?

I am glad others have answered this as to be honest I don't know the routes as well across the chase area tomorrow. My current thinking would be to sit somewhere near the M54 just west of Birmingham as this will provide me quick access westwards towards Shrewsbury. It also puts me in close proximity to the M6 which is a quick way north into Staffordshire and Cheshire. With things as they are and it being a Saturday, I am hoping this will prevent running into too much traffic congestion.

Or a helicopter. Times are hard for us storm chasers, having to stay on just roads

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall.
