There were some absolutely stunning cloudscapes around with those storms near Birmingham yesterday, hoping the same for today!

Just a quick request / idea for those posting up photos - if you can post your best ones over into the gallery, they're kept and displayed across the site - the storms one is here (although you can make your own albums if you like as well):

Good to see some cross-model agreement for the MCS @Paul Sherman mentioned for midweek.

It'll definitely be the far South's turn for some fun by then, if it even comes off of course!

Back to today, looks like things are developing across the South Midlands already. Great news for here but I reckon we end up as a breeding ground for some decent storms for the North West later on as well. More or less similar areas to yesterday, just firing around here and points south instead of the Home Counties and London as it was yesterday. That's my take on it anyway.

Interesting afternoon ahead...no doubt about that.

Yeah probably our 1 single storm of the year and then we will be punished by the thunder gods for having it

Still a blanket of cloud and temperatures still held back at 16c. I don't think today is the day for around here. Temperatures rising much better to the west of the Pennines and so I think I need to head that way. Even Buxton is at 17c despite being higher in elevation.

Nice to see lots of new members in this thread at the moment. If you're wanting to learn more about storms and how to forecast them - Nick's recently written a couple of guides to get you started:

Learn the basics of thunderstorm forecasting in this guide written by Netweather forecaster Nick Finnis.

To chase or not to chase.

I'm in Bournemouth so it's a bit of distance to get to the potential action.

If you were me where would you be heading???

Nottingham To Preston for 18z to 23z might be a tad far

But certainly west of Birmingham and up towards Cheshire should be good for the 15-21z timeframe

You might need to leave pretty sharpish

It would be quite a trek and you’ve got to ask yourself about

1) likelihood of a full or partial bust

2) chances of being in the right place at the right time

3) is it worth chasing on a slight risk? These may not be long-lived storms

4) the long drive home afterwards (storms travelling NE so you might end up following them even further away

Promising start but nothing came out of it. Looks like it's gonna be dry for a little while now...

I know the south is under a low risk but I’m clutching those straws so tight I’ve got sore wrists

For now only fair weather cloud moving west to east as normal, for a change lol, and only wispy bits of nothing above. Still can't believe people though I posted fair weather cloud yesterday. That's what mid level instability looks like in its early stages, and much higher up than fair weather stuff. I'm glad those clouds bought such good storm once they built up.

Both of them options available to me and it looks like the Nottingham to Preston one may offer me slightly greater rewards, so I may head for that one

Just to add on from yesterday, the funnel cloud I captured in South Bristol ~ 4pm has been confirmed as a "shear funnel cloud". So not your typical funnel from a thunderstorm base!
