I tell yer, i was stunned last night.

Was sitting on the bed talking with my o/h discussing whether i was "going out" or not, due to the cloud cover, then between the clouds there they were! it wasnt even 11pm!

Me n me youngest went out, there was a very bright display in the west, low down, in the north they were higher up , bright blue - almost like daylight, and was fragmented, showing the classic ripples..

But the bloody cloud spoilt it, it was certainly the best display i had ever seen, after only seeing a few weak ones before this june. My forrays in previous years always resulted in nowt.. makes me think, how come ive never seen them before? i mean in the past. when i was younger i was often out late, but have never seen them...

was i just unlucky? or are nlcs becoming more visible? are they growing?

We're buried in cloud for the foreseeable....

One peep of them before dawn Saturday morning but otherwise a blank.

A real shame as Daughter has been around and she missed my alert last year when we had those stunning displays!

I can relate to that Rob...I told a story last year, of how as a teenager (70`s) and first learning about the Arouras (Northern lights)

I asked my elders whether they had seen had ever witnessed the Northern lights..."OHHh yes it was a big thing down our ..st ( early 50`s).....the neighbours used to knock the doors and most folks got the kids up.

We used to walk up to the top of Shakespeare rd to get a clear view."

People back then used to call this show...The Northern lights

My Mom 93....who has dementia and is in a home...can still recall these stories

Important for me because this is one of the things that has 'stuck' in her memory

Same again for tonight... the 3 day out forecast looks very good and the radars are on fire again...

which over the last few displays has been fairly accurate

There`s always a chance inbetween any gaps in the cloudage

Latest Aim For 29-06-2020

Seem to have broken down from the 3 day out..... but theres plenty of bulk down to the 65°latitudes`s   and a few individual clouds down to lower latitudes for tonight

interesting the 1 day out forecast shows exactly what we saw last night which was a fairly high showing in the NE skies

Edit in my excitment last night i mixed up East from West..last nights showing was N-NE

WHY ARE NOCTILUCENT CLOUDS SO WAVY? Anyone who's seen noctilucent clouds would agree. They are extraordinarily wavy--much more so than ordinary clouds near the surface of the Earth. Consider this example photographed by Marek Nikodem of Szubin, Poland:

Marek-Nikodem-DSC_7585_1593484510_lg.thumb.jpg.069352778ca4dbad60e5f109840c62cb.jpg

"On the morning of June 30th, an exceptionally bright and beautiful display was visible," says Nikodem. "Even random people who went to work in the morning stopped and admired the electric-blue ripples."

What makes noctilucent clouds so wavy? The answer lies in the lower atmosphere. Powerful storm systems and other disturbances near Earth's surface send ripples of temperature and pressure up into the sky. These ripples are called "gravity waves." Gravity waves can propagate all the way up to the mesosphere, where they imprint themselves on the forms of noctilucent clouds.

Often, gravity waves break in the noctilucent zone (82-85 km above Earth's surface), dumping their energy and momentum there. Radar studies of noctilucent wave structures can trace this energy and tell researchers a great deal about upper atmospheric circulation.

I wonder if volcanic activity would be classed as 'other disturbances' and may be instrumental in gravity waves breaking into the mesosphere.  Some research for another day for me l think.

AIM updated to the 30th and does it look quite tasty over the next few days as quite a few hanging down bits around the 11am to 1pm area.

Arnie your thoughts ?

Its looking like theres strong showings on the horizon, and upto Capella?.. Trouble is, we are unlikely to get clear skies until Sunday night at least... However Monday and Tuesday should be clear?
