I was talking about a monthly average high. My warmest May had an average high of 21.2c which is 3c above normal. Every other month between April-August has seen months with highs 4-5c warmer than average.

Good stats. Interesting to note 1992, 1989 and 2018 feature only once. 1922 brought an impressive warm period. 1990 first 4 days were preety exceptional. Late may 1947 very impressive as well. Mid may 98 shows up as being very warm as I remember.

We used to camp at the end of May in the South of England and I recall the best years were 1978 and 1982. The Spring Bank Holiday in 1985 was interesting, starting off muggy and very thundery and ending up with blue skies and very cold nights. The SB Holiday at the end of May 1984 was by far the worst, with rain pretty well all the way through the long weekend.

May 2017 was definitely my personal favourite. Relatively cool first 10 days here due to onshore easterly wind but very sunny. There was also the warm period later on as touted by some.

May 2018 comes up second for self-explanatory reasons.

Really liked May 2016 too because another warm and sunny May. Last 4 days were especially nice. Much of May 2010 was cool but also sunny besides one temporary but really pleasant warm period perfectly coinciding with the weekend of the 22nd/23rd.

Wasn't a fan of all other Mays that I can remember since 2010. May 2015 I loathe especially.

Re damianslaw stats post, I certainly remember the warmth and sun of early May 1976 which of course led on to a heatwave during June to late August. At the other extreme, we had sleety snow one evening on the North Downs in early May 1979, at the end of a long and at times brutal winter, and I don't recall the weather improved much during the summer that year either.

I'm too young to remember the weather in 1989 and wasn't in the country for 2018 (of course I wasn't), so I can't actually recall a May which was consistently excellent. There have been plenty of Mays with warm/hot spells though. 2008 in particular had a superb first half but the second half was forgettable. I thought 2016 was pretty good as well.

On the flip side of the coin it's good to see 2015 getting the opprobrium it so richly deserves, something which was surprisingly lacking at the time. A dire month. Also a special mention for May 2019 in Bratislava, which was as bad as any May I've experienced in the UK.

May 2015 was a completely unremarkable month, slightly cooler than average with near average sun and rainfall. The warmest day all month here was a paltry 21.6c.

At Heathrow...

Avg max: 17.6c

Avg min: 8.8c

Precip: 41.6mm

Sun: 189.0 hours

Do you remember 1992? That was probably the best May overall I can remember, closely followed by 2018 and 1989.

2019 - Cool and wet for the most part. A maximum of just 6.C on the 8th. Saved by a warm sunny spell midmonth with temperatures getting up to 23.C

2018 - Amazing month, very warm by day but nights were quite cool making it very pleasant, the first couple of days were quite cold from what I can remember however. 26.C was reached on the 28th.

2017 - Another very good May very pleasantly warm in the first half around 17.C-20.C with lots of sunshine. Unsettled for a time in the middle of the month. Record high of 27.9.C on the 26th and a minimum of just 17.4.C the next night. Thundery breakdown.

2016 - Unsettled and cool first week, warm and sunny in the second and last weeks, unsettled spell in the third week. Although it was rather warm expect for the first week.

2015 - Abysmal, very cool and unsettled aside from a few days midmonth very wet at time as well didn’t exceed 18.C all month which is pathetic. Sunshine believe it or not was above average.

2014 - Dull and wet but quite warm especially at night not much in the way of sunshine at all until the final week.

2013 - Very cool for the most part but some warm days sporadically thrown in quite a thundery month as well.

2012 - Unbelievably cold and wet first half, I can remember trees turning to autumn colours after the unbelievable warm and sunny March most trees in my area were in full leaf by the middle of April but afternoon the persistent dullness of April and early May they’d went autumnal. It was saved by a very warm and sunny spell.

2011 - Wet but generally mild and sunny, a very showery month. Severe wind storm on the 23rd.

2010 - Dry and very sunny quite cool in the first half but the second half was very warm. Warmest day of the year was reached on the 22nd.

2009 - Sunny but unsettled warm in the final week.
