Insect identification please

We have had lots of insect spotting the last few days but neither I nor my wife know what these are to tell our son. Does anyone know please?

The lower one is a Dotted bee fly.

A nice 'spot'.

Often mistaken for a bee, you might be lucky and spot the dotted bee fly on the short grass that has been well grazed by the cattle.

That was our first thought but it was more than 10 times bigger than the usual ones! If it was then perhaps I should have kept it!

There was nothing to scale against but try this for comparison.

Perhaps the first one is a Harlequin ladybird juvenile stage. They're pretty variable in colour and form.
