As we approach the long easter weekend, next week, I am hoping someone can share some stats from previous easters, the top 5 warmest and coldest Easter Sundays, and even better an average mean over the Good Friday-Easter Monday period to get more of a feel of how the whole easter period was, as can often happen at this time of year, one cold day can be followed by a much warmer one.

Recent easters have seen some extreme temps cold and warm wise, more in terms of warmth, 2018 I think was a record breaker, albeit it was a very late easter. Last year was also very warm, remember sitting on a beach on Easter Monday (won't be able to do that this year!).

Cold wise, 2013 was notably coldand 2008 brought widespread snow, both those years easter was very early.

Any stats much appreciated.

Yes, I remember attending a football match in Sheffield on Easter Saturday 22nd March 2008 (which was about as early as it could get) and being glad that the snow did not settle until shortly before the end of the game, as it was thick on the ground by the time we arrived back in the City centre. The Sunday was no better on the East Coast and the pipes in our caravan froze overnight Easter Sunday into Monday.

Easter Sunday 1975 was on 30th March and was similarly cold and snowy in the south east, as described elsewhere under Historic Weather.

There was some snow Good Friday 1998 - Easter was in early April and I remember it snowing most of the day on and off, even if it didn't stick. That came off the back of a mild winter. This was in Birmingham.

Easter Monday 1994 had snow too. I was nine at the time, and it was absolutely shocking seeing it snow!

Yes, I seem to remember snow being reported falling at Gatwick that Easter.  Didn't see any myself mind.

1987 Easter was warm and so was 1984.

1991 was cold if memory serves me well, or was if 1993. I remember a few of those good Friday periods in the early to mid 90s being chilly or rainy.

Easter of 1998 stands out for me. That was the wintriest Easter that I can recall. Snow fell on all four days.

Easter 2013 was the coldest but no snow fell here.

Can recall some cracking Good Fridays, 1987 is one that has stuck in the memory

The Easters of 1984 and 1987 both stand out as being very warm from my childhood memories.  Easter itself in 1989 was actually fairly mild, but it turned very cold the following week with snow.  1998 was cold and wintry for some but no snow IMBY.  2008 was cold with substantial snow for some, but only really settled over high ground in the far south.  I would also say Easter 2013 was the coldest but no snow for my location.

Thanks for the stats above, excellent stuff. Ignore what I said about 2018, for some reason I thought it was later.. it was much colder than I thought. Last year just inched out 2011. 1987 stands out as a warm easter as well, I have vague memories of that one. How much warmer were 2011 and 2019 quite exceptional nothing coming very close except 1949.

2008 was a cold one with snow on Easter Sunday in the morning. I remember 98 being very wintry, a run of 4-5 days of snow falling. Good Friday brought dire conditions to midlands I remember, with significant flooding. Cyclonic cold conditions on Good Friday arctic air undercut it and thereafter a deep seated northerly ensued. Interesting to note how these cold easters came on the back of very mild winters.

I too have memories of a run of quite cool unsettled easters in the early 90s.

So in the last 10 years we've had second- and third-warmest, as well second-coldest. Not bad going from a weather enthusiast's POV!

I remember Easter 1995 coincided with one of that spring's many switch-arounds.  In Tyneside it was warm and sunny on the Friday - the last of three consecutive days of near-unbroken sunshine - then the fine spell broke down over the weekend, there was only one dull cold wet day that April and it coincided exactly with Easter Monday.  Then on the Tuesday morning there were snow showers.  Incidentally the May Day weekend of 1997 was similar with a switch-around from warm sunshine, through a cold dull wet Bank Holiday Monday, to snow showers on the Tuesday.   Cleadon in Tyne and Wear managed to dodge the widespread wintry showers of early April 1994 so, as I began recording the weather in 1993 and April 1993 was warm if rather dull and wet, 18 April 1995 was my first recording of snow in April.

I remember Easter 1998 pretty well - in Tyneside the Good Friday was raw, dull and sleety, then the Saturday, Sunday and Monday had sunshine and snow showers with a dusting of snow from east-coast snow showers early on the Sunday.  Temperatures fluctuated a lot on that showery weekend, reaching 5 to 7C during the sunny intervals but falling close to freezing in the heavier showers.  There were further longer spells of rain, sleet and snow further south if I remember rightly.  Also parts of north-west England had lying snow off a polar low on the following Tuesday.

I had a holiday in the Glasgow area in Easter 2008 where it was sunshine and snow showers every day but the frontal system overnight 22nd/23rd produced just rain at Glasgow.  I returned to Cleadon in Tyne and Wear late on the Monday 24th and there was a rogue heavy snow shower in the North East that evening which brought a marked squall and a temperature drop from +2C to -1C, but it quickly thawed from underneath.

I was up in the Vale of York in Easter 2013 where it was very cold, mostly cloudy with the odd sunny interval, but there was no snow, as it was a bit late in the season for that type of continental easterly flow to generate much showery activity over the North Sea even though it was exceptionally cold for the time of year.

Looks like easter 2020 is also going to produce a notable switcharound, significant warmth on Easter Saturday to cold by Easter Monday, possible 15 degree marked difference in the SE.

Thanks very much for this information. I seem to recall 2013 was a strange year from the weather point of view, with the weather reflecting the seasons almost to the day. Jan to March (including Easter) was very cold, April to June was mild and damp, and July to September was very warm and sunny. Or was that my imagination?
