Peak 850s for today;

image.gif

21c with the 20c across most of the south east/East Anglia. Interestingly this plume event has pretty much upgraded itself all the way up until today.

Today will likely mark the moment where 35c has been reached/surpassed for the third year in a row.

Exceptional temperatures for yet another year..

Fortunately the dew points are not that high in the hottest spots. No one can moan that it's humid.

It looks like cloud will spoil it being the warmest day of the year here.

It would seem the further east the better if you want the yearly high broken due to the advancing cold front

Around the 1990's and early 2000's to get over 30c used to be quite exceptional but since late 2000's onwards and especially since summer 2013 it has become very common to breach 30c every summer without fail and 35c+ events seem to now be as common as the 30c events used to be. It's only a matter of time now before 40c gets breached

Yep. And it'll be the fourth year in a row where 34c+ has been reached.

Uh oh Heathrow better not win today or we will have to listen to the plane debate for a few days.

It'll win. Not a believer in the plane argument but Heathrow seems much more often than not these days to record the highest temperature when things get hot.

Edit: At 11am it was already 2C hotter than Northolt??

And within 10/20 years we’ll probably be saying we’ve reached 40oC 3 years in a row

Late 2000s summers struggled to reach 30-32c.

Since 2011, 34c has become more achievable, and since 2013 its more common.

It's remarkable the ease at which we reach exceptionally high temperatures.  In what has been otherwise a pretty cool month to be potentially reaching 36C+ is quite remarkable.  It's not like we've had weeks of warm weather to warm the ground.  Just shows how very high temperatures are becoming more and more common in Europe (and the rest of the world).

It is but I’d rather wed have had a warmer month but with no exceptional heat just low to mid 20’s. Rather than a whole month of below average temperatures but one day of 30°C + where it’s too hot to do much.

Wow, Heathrow hit 35°C (34.6) at noon. Same temperature, same time as last year's 38°C day.

How high will it go? The cloud coming up from France doesn't seem to be widespread so 37? 38°C.. ? Again!?

A full 1.5C hotter than nearby Northolt. Heathrow running away with it once again, gets a little boring.

If memory serves me correctly Heathrow reached 34C at 11am on 1st July 2015.

A tale of two London's.

Londonderry is currently half that temperature and pouring with rain!

Yes the only thing they have in common is their name sadly.

Absolutely ridiculous we get a whole month of below average temperatures yet get one day of scorching hot temperatures where it’s too hot to do anything. But it seems like our summers are all or nothing these days. Either too cool or boiling hot. I guess that’s climate change for you.

Well here in Portsmouth I'm always directly 2/3 hours downwind from Heathrow in these set-ups.

In 2015 and 2019, we had cloud during the day here.

But this year - no cloud at all so far.

Starting to wonder how high this could go. 4 hours more heating left. No cloud. Just 4C off the all-time record and 2.4C off 3rd place in the all-time list.

If Heathrow reports anything above 36C at 1pm then who knows.

Shame we can't get -38°C in winter! It's only summer that gets more and more extreme for the UK.

The need to warm/dry the ground is ALWAYS overplayed on this forum, every year. At this time of year it really doesn't take much to dry the ground out sufficiently. It is never an issue if you have a really hot air mass and clear skies.

If there is a month unworthy of grabbing a high temperature record, it is this one. It doesn't deserve anything but to be confined to the dustbin. One day doesn't escape from the fact, it has been atrocious.

I really hope we don’t break the all time temperature record again, this month doesn’t deserve it at all. If it does you can bet the global warming brigade will say it’s been a scorching summer despite the fact the last four weeks have been significantly below average.

Even my trusty AROME is too low already. This is the midday chart. London should be between 32C and 33C right now according to this. But it's 2C too low. It usually picks out the Heathrow heat bubble, too.

arome-0-5-1.png?31-12

If it's still 2C too low at 4pm, we will have reached 38C. Surely not again!!
