The former by far. Snow is just eye candy, it causes disruption when it gets compressed into ice, and sends the heating bills up. A mild winter has the possible interest of windstorms, although they can also be disruptive. Summer on the other hand is a time when people like to do outdoor activities and enjoy the sun, and if summer arrives and it is a cool clag fest, it is inevitably disappoiting, especially as the next season along is autumn, so climatologically the weather is only going to deteriorate, at least after a grotty winter there is the hope of a nice spring and warm summer.

Getting there but still not as warm as of like here with it hovering just under 20°C. At least it’s been sunny all day today.

Only taken 12 days to get something that actually feels like July. Sunny and 24c.

It’s the best day we’ve had since the mid June heatwave week, which was 3 weeks ago now. It’s reaching the dizzy heights of 23c in west London.

Fairly nice day, but nothing special for July.

If it's mentioned in the Express then it MUST be true right?

A lovely day today with max of around 22c, just seen the forecast for the week, again looks like plenty of cloud and drizzly rain Tuesday-Thursday...

Yet another damp squib.  Cold night followed with a sunny morning but naturally the cloud bubbled up to give a mostly cloudy afternoon with a disappointing 20C.  No chance to sunbathe.  Good job I take a Vit D3 supplement.  Yet another week of cloudy, damp and cold grotfest to look forward to.

Half decent today with warm sun for most of the day. Just need to get rid of that cool breeze, hopefully by next weekend we might get there.

Definitely the former, for my preferences. Being an outdoors type and keen gardener, I love the longer days, seeing things grow, going camping and generally wearing shorts and t-shirts on days off. Obviously, some rain is important but the crap weather often gets stuck in a long rut in the UK. Snow is beautiful initially and a wonder but quite quickly becomes a nuisance and looks ugly half thawed, it’s better when temperatures can stay below freezing day and night.

This month is fast becoming boredom central! Kinda reminds me of July 1998.

Very dull once more here after 12 PM. - one of those things that does my head in during northern England summers, it always goes thick overcast during early afternoon until about 5-6PM so we get the highest temperature at about 12 noon and then it stays a good 2-3 degrees cooler once the cloud builds in. When I lived in the south this was much less of a problem.

Today it reached 19.1°C at 12:09 and has now slumped back down to 17.5°C with garbo stratocrapulus rubbish festering up the sky making for a cool useless afternoon. And the highs that were formerly 20°C on the BBC have now been downgraded to 16 or the next two days, utterly pathetic. I cannot wait until 1st September, because I don't have any kind of expectation of pee-warm weather and more than two seconds of sun then. Bugger "summer". Scummer, crummer, bummer, dumber, but not summer.

Nice start to today but now it’s returned to the usual cloudy and breezy weather so far this month

Is this going to end up like July 2010, which was warm in the SE (av max 25.0c), but terrible everywhere else?

Almost certainly, the average high here is a lame stunted 17 degrees, should be 21.5 in July where I live. This is really the "anti-2018" July up here. And every indication of any normal weather has been downgraded beyond all comprehension day by day every day.

It's only 21.9c here for the first 12 days of the month. Even with the next 2 weeks slightly warmer than average, it only gets up to 23.1c by 26th. We will need a heatwave in the final week for this month to end up near the 81-10 or 91-20 average.

23.0c is the limit of what I find an acceptable July here while still being below average. Any lower, and sunshine would need to increase drastically. We don't get cool and sunny summer months here though (eg 22c with 230+ hours).

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall.
