Roll on Summer 2021!

All the best to you all.

Thanks for this. It backs up what I’ve been saying about my little neck of the woods being drier, warmer and sunnier than usual this summer. Most people think I’m crazy when I say it’s been a great spring and summer. Move a short distance elsewhere and it’s not such a sunny picture.

Very pleasant afternoon in Wolverhampton.  Making the most of extended Bank Holiday with a couple of days leave. Tour about a few pubs and taking in the T20 cricket England game with a few beers. Nice day. Nice evening. Something about late summer/early Autumn as the evenings draw in.

It’s a new chapter in the year.

Thank you for posting these, it's good to see them together rather than on separate pages.

This rather confirms the scenarios this summer where relatives / colleagues / Netweather users were saying how drab the weather is their way and me thinking 'it's not THAT bad...'.

Kent clearly got away with it mostly when the weather came in from the North and West still managing a few 25Cs between the June hot snap and August heatwave.

Anyway, another summer come and gone, Iooking forward to seeing what autumn and winter bring!

150% of rainfall and <75% of sunshine. Truly horrendous. The slightly higher temperatures are pretty pointless but point to a wet tropical maritime air mass.

I don’t quite follow you here, surely it makes the summer feel even more worse? I’m very happy we had that amazing spring but it does seems like a lifetime ago. I want great summer weather in summer not spring, utilising the longest days and when I’m not working.

I’m very pleased by premise of my summer forecast.

B260514E-A0E4-4D6E-B111-E0EE37844169.thumb.png.386055e4c5d8b1135326e471f11be599.png

The point being that if spring had been poor, we’d have had six months of poor weather on the back of... six months of poor weather.

I totally agree that a good spring does not excuse a poor summer, but I’m very glad that spring was the way it was, even though the first 2/3 of March were still very wet and windy, especially given the circumstances this year.

By and large though I’d much prefer a normal varied spring and a good summer.

A pretty grim summer for us. It finished on 411 hours (72%) of sunshine, making it the dullest on record, just beating out the previous holder of 1987 which had 413 hours. July and August were truly bad:

June: 182hrs (97%)
July: 97hrs (49%) - dullest on record and first summer month ever with <100hrs.
August: 132hrs (72%) - 3rd dullest in 40 years

Rainfall-wise all three months were wetter than average:

June: 73.4mm (124%)
July: 64.8mm (120%)
August: 95.4mm (158%)

Temperature-wise close to average overall:

June: 14.4C (+0.3C)
July: 15.6C (-1.0C)
August: 17.0C (+0.5C)

It was the 4th worst summer since 1980 on the summer index:

2008: 213
1998: 212
1982: 210
1986: 205
1988: 204
1985: 199
2020: 196
1980: 194
2012: 194
1987: 174

Nine days reached 25C and one day 30C. The majority of which were in August.

Extremely poor. Very interesting that the dullest summer on record came after the sunniest spring on record though!

I'm not complaining, as I like rain and it's a good thing down in the SE, but I thought this frontal rain was supposed to completely die before getting this far east today? It caught me out seeing the rain starting a minute ago and there's actually a fair amount showing on the radar!

I had 1982 not too bad here, but yes 1980 along with 1985,1986,1987 and 1988 were all poor, however i can cope with repeats of that if we also had repeats of 1983,1984 and 1989 which were all amazing. So amazing that all three were better than every summer since except for 1995 and 2018.

Summers in order with the best at the top and the worst at the bottom

1976 301

1995 298

1983 278

1955 277

1911 274

1984 271

1959 269

1975 268

1949 267

1989 262

1947 255

1933 251

1901 249

1921 249

2003 247

1925 246

2006 246

1996 245

2018 isnt on here but i think it drops in either 3rd or 4th place[Manchester summer index]

Yes they were. Maybe that explains why everything looks so depressing when you watch any tv dramas or films made in the UK during the 80s.

That being said, the weather isn’t any sunnier these days.

1990 was still good, and it was also hot in July and August.

Most summers since, have only had 1 month or 6 weeks of very good summer weather. 1994, 2006, 2003 and 1999 are all good examples, 2013 was probably slightly better.

Is there no thread for "summer 2020 how was it for you?"

Well just to sum this summer up in my opinion I really would like to place it into the bin of foul summers and look forward to the next one , but theres something about this years that really makes it one to remember. The Mid June thunderstorms and late June heatwave, The cold days in July i will want to forget but then comes a flirt with a continental heatwave on the extreme scale and yet another shoot at the temp record. and the most intense storms Ive witnessed over my head for about 6 hours.

In my neck of the woods we very rarely hit 30C during heatwaves yet it happened in all three summer months and its not this year it happened last year too. Our crazy climate is forever changing at crazy speed. Definately a crazy Summer and one that will pop up in conversations in the future for good and bad reasons.

Ah gotta love the tabloids. Sun and Coral saying the odds have been slashed on the "hottest September ever" because parts of the country will reach the low to possibly mid 20s for about a day next week.

Saw the Express quoting NetWeather a few days ago saying scorching weather of up to 21c was forecast in the south....which is basically average for the time of year. How are they allowed to keep printing such crap?

Think the UK will join in on that cold, too. We didn’t have a winter here, very little happened weather-wise, it was so weird.

I think Eastern Europe will get a very cold winter, after the mild one of last year. The snow will be back with a vengeance.

People say that we are going to get a cold winter every year though, and it doesn’t happen.

Well the last few days have been very mixed with a mixture of cloud, rain, showers and sunshine at times. Temperatures in the mid teens and a moderate westerly breeze. Cold at night.

I was out yesterday and it was cool, dry and mostly cloudy. I found the wind really refreshing.

If this was still summer I would be moaning but as we are into September now (and officially into meteorological autumn) I don’t mind. This kind of weather is all very typical for September around here anyway.

Would I prefer a high pressure setup with clear warm sunny days? Yes. But we have to take what we are given.

It’s been a great extension of summer here in the SE corner. Shorts and t shirt weather again today with strong warm sunshine. Looking good for the next week too. Though a noticeable chill in the evening as the sun sets.

If it is shorts and t shirt weather with temperatures of around 17C, were you naked when it was around 30+C during the August heatwave?

One man's t shirt weather is another man's parka.

Though to be fair a lot of people wearing similar clothes this morning round these parts
